Teen Dystopia Films Gaining Attention

The films focusing on the teen dystopia started gaining attention in 2012 with ‘The Hunger Games’ of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (USA) (NYSE:LGF). While the studio has followed the trend since then with ‘Divergent’ and ‘Ender’s Game,’ others, such as Fox made an entry this genre recently.

In this regard, Rentrak Corporation (NASDAQ:RENT)’s senior media analyst, Paul Dergarabedian says that they should be glad at Fox because having an opening of $32.5 million in September is strikingly good.

The Maze Runner’ is based on James Dashner’s novel and the plot of the story focuses on a gang of a few boys who are trapped in a glade with only maze as their exit.

Dergarabedian says that the decision of Fox to have the plot of a movie on popular book series was quite smart. He added that this was a gamble of Fox, which paid well because; such plots do not serve everyone equally well.

Tapping the younger audience for success is quite difficult, he explains.

Business of Hollywood over the Year

The Maze Runner was expected to gross a total of $37 million on its debut, as per the BoxOffice.com. The budget of this flick was $34 million. Over the year, the weekend sales have increased 30% for top 10 films. This amounts to $91.1 million in total now.
