Boston, MA 02/12/2014 (wallstreetpr) – If Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) seals a deal with Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) to be its new supplier for the company’s flagship phone, it might end up doubling the number of sensors that it supplies to the latter. Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) is currently in negotiations with Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) to supply sensors for a “new iPhone,” as per a report that has come in from Japan.
Doubling supplies
The talks call for Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) to double the supply of the camera components for the new iPhone that is projected to be launched early next year, said the report un Nikkei, which is the largest business daily in Japan. Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) supplies CMOS or complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor sensors for Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone 5S rear-mounted-cameras. Nikkei said that almost all the CMOS rear-mounted sensors for the current iPhones are supplied by Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE). The daily added that Apple might opt for Sony sensors for its front-facing cameras for the iPhones too.
The suppliers
Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) apparently supplies Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) with over 100M on an annual basis and a major portion of these are used in iPhones said the business daily. But this number might double in the next-gen Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) products, said the report. Orders from Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) can have a profound impact on the investment plans for the companies that supply various components for the company’s iPhone and the iPad.
The catalyst
Sharp is an example in time. The company has invested very heavily in a certain LCD manufacturing capacity to ensure that it is able to supply Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) with the displays it needs in the iPads. In the same manner, the orders that came in from Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) had acted as a catalyst for Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) to acquire a plant from Renesas Electronics, the Japanese chipmaker as per the Nikkei report.
