Boston, MA 10/21/2013 (wallstreetpr) – International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center announced recently that MD Anderson is using the cognitive computing system of IBM Watson for its mission to eradicate cancer. IBM and MD Anderson, following a year-long collaboration, will showcase a prototype of Oncology Expert Advisor TM of MD Anderson, powered by IBM Watson. The organizations will discuss their vision to leverage the cognitive computing power of Watson to help patients by allowing clinical to disclose valuable insights from the rich patient and research databases of cancer centres.
Oncology Expert Advisor of MD Anderson powered by IBM Watson is designed to consolidate the knowledge of clinicians and researchers of MD Anderson and to advance the goal of the cancer center, which is treating patients with the most safe, effective and evidence-based standard of care available. Also, they are expected to recognize the side effects that may occur throughout the care continuum. Also, the cognitive powered technology is expected to support researchers to make an advance move on novel discoveries.
A whole new era of computing has emerged, where cognitive powered systems “understand” the context within questions of the users, find out answers from Big Data, and improve in performance by learning from experiences. These types of cognitive capabilities are very much needed in the battle against cancer. It was projected by The American Cancer Society that in the United States, around 1.6 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed, this year.
