Boston, MA 09/10/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) Chief Executive Officer spoke in favor on Gorilla Glass just before the iPhone maker introduced its new products yesterday.
Gorilla Glass Versus Sapphire Glass
Just ahead of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s announcement of the new iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus, Corning’s Chairman, President and CEO, Wendell P. Weeks was seen discussing Gorilla Glass in a CNBC interview. In his interview, he justified the advantage of the glass manufactured by his company as compared to the other much-hyped Sapphire Glass.
Weeks highlighted that mobile phone manufacturers should prefer the use of Gorilla Glass instead of Sapphire Glass. Although he declined to give away whether Apple had chosen to manufacture the latest iPhone with the Gorilla Glass or not, but in the discussion, he mentioned that the company had invented the Glass specifically for Apple’s products.
He said that although Sapphire Glass has the advantage of being scratch resistant, but is more brittle and does not sustain drops. Gorilla glass, on the other hand, offers better drop performance and has the added advantage of being light-weighted, as well as more cost effective.
Respecting Secrets
Rumors were viral since months about anticipations related to the new iPhone. Speculations supported that Apple’s phone screens would be made of the Sapphire Glass as the company had ditched the Gorilla Glass. Same went for the much awaited Apple smartwatch, which the technology unveiled yesterday.
Keen on keeping Apple’s secrets, Weeks did not address the speculations and analysts’ reports and anticipations about the iPhone and the Apple smartwatch. However, he went ahead to discuss the advantages of the product manufactured by his company, in contrast to the much-hyped Sapphire Glass. He also reported that Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) had manufactured huge quantities of Sapphire Glass in the past, but shifted to the new offering and abandoned Sapphire Glass completely.
