AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) Entered Into Agreement With The City Of Durham To Deploy Up To 1 Gigabit Network

Boston, MA 06/13/2014 (wallstreetpr) – The City of Durham on June 12, 2014 ratified an agreement with AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) in order to bring high-speed Internet access to businesses as well as residents in Durham. As per the agreement, AT&T will offer U-verse(R) with GigaPower(SM) on the fiber network at the speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second.

Agreement and the North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN) Initiative

The agreement between the City of Durham and AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) is said to be a result of North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN) initiative. The NCNGN initiative comprises of four leading universities in the country, six cities as well as the local business leaders who are working for encouraging development of high-speed broadband networks in the country.

As a part of the plan, there will be deployment of potential fiber in order to deliver ultra-fast broadband to different parts of Durham. The U-verse of AT&T with GigaPower will help in delivering advanced TV services to the city businesses and residents. This will happen for the very first time. The Internet speed will become 10 times rapid than what is found at present.

AT&T’s investment

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has invested over $1.6 billion in the North Carolina wireless and wireline networks from 2011 to 2013. AT&T served North Carolina for 133 years. It also employs over 6800 people across this state. The AT&T U-verse with GigaPower was launched for thousands of houses in Texas and Austin as well as their surrounding communities in the year 2013.

In January 2014, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) had announced about its plans to expand fiber network in order to cover double the number of households in Austin region in 2014 because of more-than-expected demand. In 2014 itself, AT&T plans to expand this service to Texas and Dallas. In April 2014, the company had also announced that it was considering 100 cities as well as municipalities of the U.S. for this ultra-fast fiber network.
