Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE:TSN) And Monett City Faces Violations After Chemical Spill Incident In Clear Creek

Boston, MA 06/11/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE:TSN) as well as The City of Monett are facing violations now from the Department of Natural Resources because of the chemical incident that took place in May 2014. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), in its statement said that Tyson and City of Monett are defaulters according to the Missouri Clean Water Law.

Background of the Case

In the last week of May 2014, several fish were found dead in Clear Creek because of the awful smell that filled the City of Monett. The smell, it is said, was caused by one of the Tyson plants. DNR, in this case, said that they believed a chemical called ‘Alimet’ would have been entered the environment through the waste-water of the pre-treatment system of Tyson.

This waste water would have been sent to the wastewater treatment facility of the City of Monett. Alimet is a chemical which is liquid in nature and is said to be an animal feed substitute. The treated wastewater which entered the Clear Creek led to killing of thousands of fishes along the stretch which spread over a distance of six miles. The Attorney General of Missouri is also reviewing the report of DNR in order to keep a close watch on the penalties for pollution.

Various violations attracted DNR’s special department

It is believed that there have been various violations in this case and due to this, the incident has been given to the Water Pollution Control Branch, Compliance and Enforcement Section of DNR in Jefferson City. This section of DNR will review the case and suggest appropriate enforcement action to be taken against the two defaulters. In the meanwhile, DNR will also conduct hazardous waste investigation in this case in order to find out if there were other violations too or not.
