Boston, MA 05/19/2014 (wallstreetpr) – The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) will soon have a fleet of 40 LNG Trucks for product delivery, which will not only reduce operating expenses but will also reduce the greenhouse gas emission.
Support the troops
Kroger invites its customers to support the men and women in the armed forces and also their families. The company made this announcement during the annual Honoring Our Heroes campaign along with the USO.
USO has a broad range of programs for helping service members and the families. Kroger along with its customers will offer $2.3 million to USO. Kroger has till now provided the $8.5 million to USO since 2010.
LNG trucks
Kroger will employ a fleet of 40 heavy duty trucks that will run on Liquid Natural Gas (LNG). It was the first company to deploy LNG trucks in Oregon. By the end of 2014, these LNG trucks will start making deliveries.
Using LNG will have two benefits- it will reduce operating costs for the trucks, and it will reduce the greenhouse gas emission by 23%. The savings thus made will be reinvested to reduce the prices of the products of the customers.
The vehicles are expected to reduce emission of greenhouse gases by 755 metric tons per year, which is equal to removing 159 passenger cars from the road every year.
Kroger in retailing
Whole Foods Market, Inc. (NASDAQ:WFM) may soon see Kroger as its competition. Kroger can be a big threat for the company because it’s just not a retailer; it also has subsidiaries selling everything. The company has 1240 supermarkets with gas stations. The company offers one stop shopping, so that while filling the tank, the customers can also buy items that they need. Such one-stop shopping attracts middle-class customers and more specifically women.
Organic food
Organic food offerings is another way to lure middle-class customers as it offers another one-stop shopping for them. The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) is getting aggressive about organic foods and has aired TV ads for the Simple Truth line.
