Shaw Communications Inc (USA) (NYSE:SJR) Expands Free Public Wi-Fi, But Asks User Details

Boston, MA 05/15/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Shaw Communications Inc (USA) (NYSE:SJR) announced the expansion of its free public Wi-Fi to the City of Calgary. The company partnered with the city officials to provide a free online access service. The Calgary Wi-Fi project marks the latest move by the telecommunications provider in spreading its free Internet access.

Although the newly unveiled Wi-Fi service comes at no financial cost, the company asks users for details such as phone number, email address and postal code to log in for a free Internet service. Though the request for user details signals a departure from similar services available in other locations served with free Wi-Fi, the company said it intended to use the data collected from users to enhance the service and plan for future expansions.

More importantly, the company intends to use the contact data collected from its free public Internet access to deliver marketing messages to the users. As such, the company asks users to agree to allow the use of their data for marketing and advertisement purposes. The marketing messages can come from Shaw Communications Inc (USA) (NYSE:SJR) itself or affiliates, the company said at the launch of the service.

Personal information

With concerns over the misuse of personal information being widespread, Brad Shaw, the CEO of Shaw Communications Inc (USA) (NYSE:SJR), said the company does not intend to do anything with the personal information. Instead, the information will remain confidential and will only be used to enrich the service as already mentioned about marketing and advertisement.

The company stepped forward to offer free Internet service to the public because to realized people are living a fast-pace life that they need to be connected with families, and loved ones, and it wanted to be part of the solution.

Although Shaw Communications Inc (USA) (NYSE:SJR) said at the launch of the free public service that the personal information would be used for marketing purposes, the company did not identify the affiliates or the specifics about the advertisement messages it would be sending to users.
