Boston, MA 02/10/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Some undisclosed Taiwan-based supply-chain makers have reported that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is now working on an 8” tablet that is slated for an April-end release and that at the outset, the company is expected to ship out 2M units. As per the report, this will be Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s 3rd-Gen Nexus tablet. What this also means is that the company then might not be planning on releasing a 7” model in 2014. This new 8” model will come in the wake of the 2nd-Gen Nexus 7 that debuted in 2013 July and the 1st-gen model that had debuted in 2012 June.
Dismal sales
Though the 2nd-Gen Nexus 7 had enhanced hardware and quite positive reviews, its sales were not as bright as Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) had expected them to be. The cumulative sales of the 2nd-Gen Nexus 7 were below 3M units as of 2013-end.To a certain degree, that might be the reason why the company is transitioning to an 8” model now. Of course, apart from that fact, there are also a slew of 7” tablets in the market now and the price competition is also very heated at the moment. The best way to move onto a different track is to make a device which is different from the rest.
Off the beaten track
That automatically sets Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) apart from the competition. Sources are saying that the company has no interest in launching any 5” or 6” tablets.
To date there were numerous 8” tablets. Sources are of the opinion that Asus might launch the 8” Nexus tablet for Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) just as it did with the 2 Nexus 7s. Others are saying that LG might be the 8” tablet supplier. Last week, there was also some news that HTC is now returning to the tablet space and that it will be manufacturing the tablet for Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG).
