Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) got a U.S. patent for its see-through glasses that are also connected to the internet. The glasses can detect the emotions of people in its line of sight and interpret the emotions.
The patent for glasses that can interpret emotions was filed in 2012 and was awarded this week according to the public filing by the American patent office. It is not known whether the glasses would have any commercial application or not. In a statement, the company said that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) regularly applies for patents that are not incorporated into a Microsoft product.
The glasses can pick up changes in person’s body temperature or subtle shifts in voice quality. Emotional analytics is an upcoming field with both the tech firms and government, however, concerns have been raised over privacy issues.
Sensors in the glass will pick up visual and audio data from the person who is being looked at then it would be processed for things like subtle variations in amplitude and rhythm. The data is analysed for things like choice of words, speed and type of gestures, body posture and eye focus. All the information is then sent to Microsoft database, and the resultant emotion is conveyed back to the wearer.
An example of the use of the glass is if a person waves their hair or plays with them in a date then the context could signify playfulness or interest. If the same thing is done in a boardroom meeting, then that could signify boredom.
According to the patent, the glasses can give the wearer different kinds of feedbacks. The feedbacks could be stuff like postures and expressions and the people who are interacted with can be put in the database.
The glasses can also be programmed for specific scenarios like party, wedding, business situation, presentation and social situation. Depending on the scenario, the glasses will give the feedback.
