Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Committed To Open Science?

Boston, MA 02/03/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has always been a for-profit organization and it has taken this goal seriously, a little too seriously. It has missed out several opportunities in the past to collaborate with others and some of the results are there to be seen.

The Open Science Project:

However, in a sign of changing times and mood, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is contemplating publishing its scientific works in private journals. A project known as Open Science is already gaining ground and has found many backers. Microsoft was often publishing in the commercial journals, but the move will ensure that its research papers also appear in the non-commercial ones. The company has a wealth of scientific information and sharing it across will ensure that it increases. The Intellectual Property rights will remain with the company, investors need not worry on that score. In spite of the growing focus on Intellectual Property rights, companies and individuals are coming forward and sharing their wealth of research.

Why The Change?

Has the change been on account of its latest setbacks? Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is always very cagey about sharing its source code to developers. The situation became so bad that a very strong group of developers got together to develop their own operating system, an operating system which would be open and anyone could develop it as they saw fit. This lead to the development of Linux operating system from the Open Org project. Even the competitors to the Internet Explorer started developing their own web browsers just because Microsoft would not share the source with them. Microsoft is not yet changing this policy, the Open Science project is for research papers only. But it has been harmed very badly due to this policy.

A New CEO Or A New Thinking?

Is this an inkling of a new thought process at Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)? It remains to be seen and also appears to be wishful thinking. The news that finally the company has shortlisted two candidates for the top post is welcome news. The very public search for a CEO has seen its own drama and did not profit any of the parties involved. The final candidate is yet to be unveiled but there are several signs about his Indian origins.
