Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) And Qualcomm Inc (NASDAQ:QCOM) To Work On Low Cost Windows Smartphones

Boston, MA 02/24/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is to work jointly with Qualcomm Inc (NASDAQ:QCOM) to develop low priced smartphones to capture more market share in less developed countries.

Microsoft smartphones have shown poor results according to International Data Corp, a market research firm which carried out a survey on smartphones exports last year. According to the results, smartphones supporting Windows operating system accounted for only 3.3% of the total number of smartphones shipped in 2013. The rest ran on Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s Android OS or Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS. The results highlight the failure of the once leaders in computer market to make their mark in mobile phone market. Clearly, Microsoft has failed to convince handset manufacturers to employ their OS.

CEO’s strategy

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s new Chief Executive Officer, Satya Nadella, is now taking rapid steps towards establishing the company in mobile markets now. He is aiming at working on smartphone software and is boosting development of low cost phones which will primarily be targeting emerging markets. The software giant is now proposing to build its market share for the Windows operating system from the very beginning. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is partnering with hardware manufacturers to fulfill its pursuit. Advancement in the direction has already been made as it decides to work with Qualcomm to build low cost, Internet ready mobile phones. The phones will be aimed at alluring customers mainly from the less developed countries.

Together with Qualcomm Inc (NASDAQ:QCOM), Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will create the basic core of the phone that means the duo will work on developing the processors and wireless chips that will be incorporated in the phones. The next step would involve developers and handset producers who would be engaged in developing designs to fit devices which would be operated on Windows OS.

In the pipeline

Headquartered in Redmond, Washington, the software maker Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) also has plans to update its Windows 8.1 software. In addition, it will also update software for the low cost Windows smartphones it will be manufacturing.
