McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) Sued For Poor Sanitation Provisions In Restaurants In Russia

Boston, MA 09/11/2014 (wallstreetpr) – McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was sued by Russian authorities on the pretext that the fast-food chain understated the calorie content of its milkshakes and burgers.

McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) is facing issues in the country, and Russia’s consumer safety authorities have sued the U.S. company also on grounds that some of its food products were found to have microbial contaminations. The watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, has claimed that some of the restaurants of the company have poor sanitation facilities. Around a dozen of its restaurants have been shut down, temporarily, in Moscow and some other parts of Russia. As Bloomberg article reports, McDonald’s first outlet that it had opened in the Soviet Union back in 1990, has also been closed down for the time being.

Unscheduled Probes

In an investigation on McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) food products, it was established that it understates the calorie contentin its burgers by as much as 70%. Apart from this, the food chain devalues the nutritional value of the milkshakes it produces by almost 50%. The information, for the probe conducted in June, was shared by the Novgorod branch of the watchdog on its website in July.

The Ukraine conflicts between the U.S. and Russia have taken its toll on McDonald’s as it received calls from the country’s lawmakers to close down the chain. In this context, it is also noteworthy that President Vladimir Putin had issued an import ban of several food products last month, as a strike against the European Union and the U.S. sanctions on companies, as well as individuals.

McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD)’s had to shut down as many as eight of its restaurants in Russia after Rospotrebnadzor report claimed that the company had violated sanitary regulations. Among the eight was also its oldest and biggest restaurant, near the Pushkin square in Moscow. Around 180 outlets, of the total around 450 restaurants, witnessed unscheduled investigations in the last three months.
