Boston, MA 02/12/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE:RAD) and several other chain drug stores including Walgreens, have been urged by about eight senators to drop tobacco from their shelves. By doing this, they will follow in the footsteps of CVS Caremark Corporation (NYSE:CVS) which has already done it. Instead, the stores are urged to promote tobacco cessation products. Although the stores have the legal right to sell and profit from trading tobacco products, they can also positively impact public health by reducing the availability of cigarettes and such like products in their stores. Doing this, according to the senators, RAD and the various drug stores will foster health and wellness. Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE:RAD) has about 4,623 stores in 31 states. The stock gained 11 cents per share to close north $5.75 Tuesday.
