Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ): The Sole Gainer Of Global External Disk Storage Systems Market In 2Q

Boston, MA 09/08/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Technologies, software, solutions and services provider Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) was the only gainer among the top five companies to gain from the global external disk storage system market during the second quarter despite 1.4% drop in the overall market.

HP Gains

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ)’s revenues from the external disk storage system rose modestly to $596 million in the second quarter from $594 million in the year-ago period, representing 40 basis points improvement, a data from International Data Corporation indicated. On market share basis, it rose by ten basis points to 10.1% from 10.0% during the same period under review and remained at the fourth place.

EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC), which is a market leader, suffered a 5.2% drop in revenue to $1.76 billion from $1.86 billion in the same quarter last year. This, in turn, dragged down its market share to 30.1% from 31.2% in the previous year quarter.

Similarly, NetApp Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP) also witnessed 3.0% fall in revenue to $765 million from $789 million while market share slackened to 13.0% from 13.2%. Another company, International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) recorded 4.7% drop in revenue to $712 million from $747 million whereas its market share dipped by 40 basis points to 12.1% from 12.5% during the period under review.

Dell, which is placed fifth, suffered 1% fall in revenue to $425 million from $429 million while its market remained at 7.2%.

Total Disk Storage Market

In the total disk storage system market also, Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) managed to post 4.7% uptick in revenue to $1.36 billion from $1.3 billion while its market share advanced to 17.5% from 16.8% in the year-ago quarter. The company has also retained its second position in terms of market share.

EMC, IBM, Dell, and NetApp have all recorded downtick in revenue by 5.2%, 4.3%, 5.9%, and 3.0% respectively. Similarly, their market share also dipped to 22.7% from 24.0%, 12.9% from 13.5%, 11.4% from 12.2% and 9.8% from 10.2% respectively.

Overall Market

The overall market for global external disk storage system witnessed 1.4% drop in revenue to $5.87 billion from $5.95 billion whereas total market global disk storage system managed to post 0.3% growth to $7.78 billion from $7.76 billion in the previous year quarter.

IDC cited weak demand for the market sluggishness as high-end store sales continued its downtick for the fourth straight quarter.
