ESBWR Features
The Boiling Water Reactor designed by GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy encompasses some of the advanced safety systems as well as simplified mechanism through natural circulation process. The attributes like these, in a reactor allow it to cool on its own for over a week, even if the operator does not intervene. For all these characteristics and many more, this is not just company-acclaimed, but also the U.S. NRC-approved safest nuclear reactor design of the world.
At present, there are two license applications related to the technology of this reactor, pending with U.S.NRC. Dominion Virginia Power had also chosen the technology used in ESBWR for the North Anna Unit 3 plant, in the previous year.
