Boston, MA 10/16/2013 (wallstreetpr) –

General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) is supplying 8 units of its 1.4 MW (megawatt) biogas engines, Jenbacher J420, which is ecomagination qualified, for a new cogeneration plant that will produce 11.2 MW of renewable energy (on site) at the Dan Region (Shafdan) Waste-water Treatment Plant. This plant is located south of Tel Aviv and is the biggest of its kind in Israel.

The largest waste-water treatment plant in Israel is The Shafdan waste-water treatment plant, which treats municipal waste-water for two million people in central Israel. MED (Mey Ezor Dan) Cooperative Agricultural Water Society LTD operates and owns Shafdan. In the Dan Region, MED is responsible for treating and collecting sewage. A large amount (380,000 cubic meters) of municipal waste-water is treated each day by The Shafdan WWTP from Tel Aviv and other surrounding municipalities.

The new bio energy facility is designed by MED with CDM Smith, which will consist of 8 anaerobic digesters with a volume of 13,200 cubic meters each. This facility is among the largest in the world. This facility will also include the largest staged thermophilic anaerobic digestion processes of the world. MED is installing the biogas cogeneration plant to give power for the Shafdan site and on site power and heat to run digesters. Also, it is installing the anaerobic digestion system in order to improve the efficiency of the plant and reduce its environmental impacts.

Authorized Jenbacher gas engines distributor of GE in Israel, Madei Taas, and the largest electro-mechanical contractor of the country, Elco Contracting and Services Ltd., submitted the winning tender to start their new power plant that is biogas based. The general manager of Madei Taas, Eli Matz said that the proven Jenbacher units of GE will play a very important role in the success of the cogeneration project of MED by generating 70% of power required to run the facility.
