Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) Opens A Research Lab In Paris To Venture Further Into Artificial Intelligence

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) made an announcement that it will put more effort in artificial intelligence research with the introduction of the research division in Paris.

So far, the company has artificial intelligence research offices in Menlo Park California, New York and the newly opened division in Paris which is a welcome addition. The social media company’s artificial intelligence venture is headed by the widely acclaimed Yann LeCun. He is skilled in a form of artificial intelligence known as deep learning. leCun will head Facebook’s artificial intelligence research division, thus joining Google and Baidu. The latter two have managed to bring on board other icons in the subject study.

Deep learning can be incorporated in various types of information such as images, videos, text, and speech. The research will involve programming a series of neural networks and then finally feeding them with some test data to see how they will respond. Snapchat and Pinterest are the latest companies to venture into artificial intelligence research.

Facebook’s decision to open up divisions in other regions in the world is part of the company’s strategy to fish for more talent. There are intelligent individuals out there who are skilled in such subjects. Bringing the company closer to them will motivate them to want to work for the company.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has been pumping a lot of funds into its research and development fields. In the first three months of 2015, the giant firm invested about $1.06 billion. The amount of the investment is nearly 30% of the total income collected within those first three months.

A deeper look at the deep learning locations reveals that the venues are not by chance. LeCum and a few other gurus on the topic are from the region around Paris. Thus, there are ties and more reasons why the deep learning division is located in Paris. The company’s other artificial intelligence divisions are hard at work to come up with long-term infrastructure to support more research in the future.
