If the rumors are to be believed Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is likely to acquire Meerkat. It may be in tune with the recent takeover of a mobile app Periscope by Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR).
To achieve success in combating the influence of Periscope with the likely acquisition, Facebook need to pump in more funds and mobilize considerable user base for the mobile app Meerkat.
The mobile apps allow users live streaming while on the move. Twitter is the medium for these apps to gather an audience for live events.
After the launch in February, Meerkat became popular with the increased use by tech journalists, celebrities as well as other technical professionals.
Meerkat utilizes the API of Twitter to get access to live tweets. It allows the users to download Twitter contacts onto their mobile app.
But Twitter has discouraged the users after few weeks of using the app by disconnecting the access to its networks.
Twitter has replaced the Meerkat with Periscope. According to Dick Costolo, Chief Executive Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), Periscope has garnered nearly a million subscribers just within ten days of its launch.
However, the rank of Meerkat has declined considerably and even didn’t find a place on the top 100 mobile apps.
On the brighter side for the app, Greylock Partners, David Tisch and other firms have pumped in $18 million in March to revive the company.
The company also needs access to social media networks like Facebook to utilize its technology. Facebook, who use a large chunk of the user base at 1.4 billion, is showing interest to acquire Meerkat. On contrast, Twitter has just 288 million subscribers.
The prospects are bright for Meerkat in the hands of Facebook to gain more subscribers.
Users are likely to benefit a lot with the feeds from Facebook in the form of news, viral videos, and other vital content.
However, the Meerkat users could have benefitted a lot from ready to enjoy real-time actions, conversation, and emotions.
Facebook too will provide access to live streams through the Meerkat app that offers more visibility for the live streams. Meerkat will also get support from facebook messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp to provide access to the users for live broadcasts.
