Boston, MA 08/22/2214 (wallstreetpr) – Edison International (NYSE:EIX)’s subsidiary Southern California Edison (SCE) meets California climate change policy through allowances in emission reduction. The state considers as one of the largest in greenhouse gases emission and continues to reduce the level through sales for future use.
Auction
On August 18, 2014, California sold 22.5 million of carbon allowances through auction at a price of $11.50 per each permit. The state also received 1.14 bids per every permit for the bidding process and sold 6.47 million of permits per $11.34 each.
Future contracts also associated with the allowances, which are currently trading at $12 per ton since April 2014. The state also offered 9.26 million permits as advance allowances, which can use over the period till 2017.
Edison International (NYSE:EIX) along with its competitors Chevron Corp., BP Plc, PG&E Corp., and investment bankers like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs are eligible for the bidding process.
Mixed feeling
The futures traded at $11.83-$11.84 a ton on the Intercontinental Exchange after the auction, which is low compared to the current trading price as per the analysts’ estimate.
For instance, California-based Four Twenty Seven’s MD Emilie Mazzacurati said that the auction will undersubscribed and clear the floor price ($11.34 per ton) as the trading in the carbon market is slow.
Even, Bloomberg’s New Energy Finance analyst Colleen Regan expects that the permits will lower the floor price; however, the demand remains in the market.
But, CME data suggested that the release of carbon dioxide permits is lower, which fell by 12% compared to 2013. So, the volatility over the trading price with respect to the demand will justify the allowances in the carbon market.
Rationale
California offers the allowance to meet the shrinking hydropower resources and increasing demand of natural gas generation. The bidding process will avail sufficient carbon to meet the current requirement and will help the state to address the future needs.
SCE, on the other end, will further increase the level through this auction like the last year where it received 32.3 million metric ton of allowances.
