Death Toll Increases To Six At Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE:FCX)

Boston, MA 05/20/2013 (wallstreetpr) – The mining activities at the world’s second largest operation by output, Grasberg in Mimika, Indonesia had been stopped after the collapse of the complex on May, 14. The underground and open pit operations at Grasberg complex were being carried out by Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE:FCX) (Closed at $32.68). The labor union at the mining operations had demanded the suspension of work until investigations into the reasons for collapse is completed.

Death Toll
When the collapse occurred, 38 workers were undergoing training at the onsite work spot, out of which six workers had been found dead. However, 22 of them are still unaccounted for and the labor union demands that the work be suspended until investigation is complete so as to do justice to the families of dead and missing workers.

The Chief Executive Officer of Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE:FCX) Richard Adkerson had been visiting the injured workers and the families of those missing workers. The government at Indonesia now demands that the safety and security standards are properly set up by the company at the mining operations before the work is started at the spot.

Labor Union
The head of Mimika branch of the All Indonesian workers Union in the Chemical, Energy and Mining sectors had demanded that thorough investigation be taken up by the government into the accident. Virgo Solossa, the head of labor union also demanded that the investigation should be transparent and comprehensive to find both the causes of the accident and the people responsible for its occurrence. The head also demanded that the operations be shut down until the investigation is complete so that the people involved and injured or killed in the incident would feel justified.

Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE:FCX) had further suspended the negotiation process for the 2013-15 Collective Labor Agreement due to the accident.
