Boston, MA 01/24/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Revisiting Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY)’s holiday performance now that a lot of emotion chatter has toned down offers a window of opportunity for investors to have sober view of the stock.
We already know that the company didn’t perform well as was expected during the nine weeks holiday trading period. The market was expecting that the electronics retailer would turn sales growth of 2 percent; instead it ended losing 0.9 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. That was not good. But look at it this way; we also don’t know how its competitors performed.
Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY)’s competitors namely Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) are yet to come out clean on what their performance was over the holiday. If we recall what the struggling retailer J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP) said about its performance, it is clear that the holiday season was not as rewarding was it was expected to be.
That being the case, it is possible Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY) didn’t fair badly compared to competitors. If that looks more speculative, then looking deep inside the figures issued by the BBY reveals that the company is executing well its turnaround strategy.
Online presence
Online is shaping up to be the biggest battle ground for retailers. An improving trend in online sales has often been used by retail execs to cool investor tirade when overall performance metrics are not attractive.
Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY) is no exception, the company announced that its online comparable-store sales increased significantly over the holiday season. This means that the company is getting it right towards securing its future. You can bet that no serious retailer can compete effectively today with the likes of Amazon and eBay without a strong online presence.
Investor takeaway
It is short and clear that Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY), with or without weak holiday sales, cannot be judged with the performance of a nine-week trading period. That being said, the stock still has a lot of room to attain its turnaround dream and return greater value to investors.
