Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s Market Share For Smartphone Operating System Falls in 2Q

Boston, MA 08/15/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Technology bellwether Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) had to witness a fall in the market share of its operating system iOS during the second quarter despite recording unit shipment growth of its smartphone. However, search engine giant Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s operating system Android extended its dominance in the smartphone operating system and remains undisputed leader.

Market Share

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s operating system Android had extended its market share in smartphones to 84.7% in the second quarter with 255.3 million units’ shipment from 79.6% with 191.5 million units’ shipment in the year-ago quarter, according to a data from International Data Corp or IDC, a market research organization. The growth in market share was attributed to a lot of new entrants such as Coolpad, Xiaomi, Lenovo, Huawei, and ZTE launching their cheap smartphones with Android operating system.

On the other hand, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS market share dipped to 11.7% from 13.0% in the previous year quarter though the company could witness 12.7% uptick in unit shipments to 35.2 million from 31.2 million in the same quarter last year. The disadvantage for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS was that only its iPhone uses the operating system and not others.

Big Losers

The worst performer was BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) as the company recorded a sharp drop of 78% in unit shipment to 1.5 million from 6.7 million units that dragged down its market share to a mere 50 basis points from 2.8% in the 2013-second quarter.

The biggest disappointment was Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s windows phone operating system. It has not only been struggling to crack the 5% market share in the smartphone operating system segment but was also struggling to hold on to its share. In fact, its market share in the smartphone operating system dipped to 2.5% from 3.4% as the shipment fell to 7.4 million units from 8.2 million units in the last year second quarter.

The others category also witnessed a sharp drop of 32.2% in shipments to 1.9million units from 2.9 million units resulting in a loss of market share to a mere 60 basis points from 1.2% in the prior year quarter.

Total Shipment

The total shipment of smartphone with different operating system advanced 25.3% to 301.3 million units from 240.5 million units in the year-ago quarter.
