Boston, MA 09/05/2014 (wallstreetpr) – TwitPic, a site with over 8.8 million Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) followers, yesterday announced that it will be bidding adieu to the world of Internet. Founder of TwitPic, Noah Everett wrote on its blog post that Twitter’s request has led to this “hard and sudden announcement.” The photo-sharing website launched in the year 2008, TwitPic will shut down later in September 2014 on Twitter’s “request” to abandon the trademark.
Irony of the Situation
It is quite ironical that Twitter, one of the largest social networking websites today, came into limelight only when in the year 2009; a user shared a TwitPic picture of Hudson River landed Flight 1549 of U.S. Airways on Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR). The picture went viral immediately and Twitter came into everyone’s eye. This was “Twitter’s Twist in Tale”!
TwitPic, which enables the users to upload and share videos, GIFs and pictures on the social media, said that the company had no resources to discourage another company of such stature. Quite ironically; Twitter was not much liked and talked-about website and TwiPic was a preferred choice of users then.
In fact, in an interview with CNBC in the year 2013, the Co-Founder of Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), Jack Dorsey admitted that, TwitPic photo that was shared on Twitter changed everything because for the world, Twitter had become a “news source” all of a sudden.
What Twitter has to Say?
Talking to CNBC, the spokesperson of Twitter said that it was not a very good sight to see TwitPic shut down. He added that Twitter encouraged developers for building something on top of Twitter, just like TwitPic has been doing for years. TwitPic has been allowed to operate with the same name, but, the spokesperson added; Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) needed to protect its brand name which included trademarks in association.
TwitPic, as of now, has not disclosed about its further course of action.
