Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), To Launch In-Home Delivery?

Latest speculations suggest that Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is currently working with Internet of Things (IoT) companies August Home, Inc. and Alottazs Labs, LLC Garageio for the development of an in-home delivery service.

In-Home Delivery

Accordingly, delivery employees will be provided with a door-opening token good for one-time use should consumers opt for in-home delivery during checkout. This will enable the courier to leave packages inside a consumer’s’ home should there be no one available to accept them.

Moreover, with the purported delivery option, merchants will be allowed to ship items without external packages as per usual requirements. Not only would this improvement help reduce environmental impact but it would also help merchants minimize shipping costs.

Smart Lock Integration

Of course, the service will only be available for consumers who have smart lock integrations in their homes. Analysts project that the smart lock industry will grow 75% in four years time, which means that a number of consumers would have already grown accustomed or are already adjusting to the technology should Amazon.com launch the service in the near future.

Drone Delivery

While the in-home delivery sounds new, Amazon.com’s drone delivery service, dubbed as Amazon Prime Air, prospects have been in the works for months now.

Earlier this month, the company’s new drone prototype has been spotted for the first time during secret tests in Britain. It was seen hovering 50 feet above the ground as the development team had been working on the system. The company has been testing its drone prototypes in Britain since July.

The ecommerce giant seeks to use drones that can fly up to 400 ft. above the ground to deliver packages weighing up to five lbs., believing that such system is safer, faster, and more environmental-friendly than traditional delivery methods. Should Amazon Prime Air turn into reality, Amazon Prime subscribers can have their packages delivered right to their doorsteps in just half an hour following checkout if they opt for Amazon Prime Air.

Recently, Amazon.com has filed a patent application for anti-collision avoidance solutions. It is widely believed that the said systems are also being evaluated in Britain.
