Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) has partnered with Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) to become an official sponsor of the Boston Marathon.
The sponsorship by Abbott is a way to celebrate the healthy lifestyle of people. According to B.A.A. Executive Director, Tom Grilk, the move by Abbott has underscored Abbott’s mission to increase the wellness and fitness of marathoners around the world.
The important marathons around the world are BMW Berlin Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, TCS New York City marathon, Olympic marathon and IAAF World Championship Marathon. The Abbott Marathon determines the best male and female marathoners in the world. Prize money of $1 million will be split evenly by men and women champions.
B.A.A. was established in 1887 and has a mission of promoting healthy lifestyle primarily through running. The B.A.A. Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world since1986; John Hancock has been the principal sponsor. The Boston Marathon is part of series of marathons around the world. Nearly 60,000 participants will take part in the event.
Abbott, as the title sponsor, is encouraging sharing “best” medical practices among the six races that make up the marathon series. Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) is providing i-STAT systems and hand blood analyzers, which will equip the marathon officials to check heart function or monitor physical exertion and administer needed care.
Elaine Leavenwoth, Senior VP and Chief Marketing and external affairs officer stated that the partnership with B.A.A underscores the need for a healthy life and a realization that good health is the cornerstone of all our endeavours in life.
The marathon, which was bombed last year by terrorists, will be under close scrutiny of the police forces. Many arrangements have been made to ensure the security of marathoners. Spectators have also been urged to bring their belongings in clear plastic packs rather than backpacks.
