Bystanders\u00a0are\u00a0filming\u00a0the\u00a0deaths or\u00a0severe beatings<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0victims instead\u00a0of\u00a0intervening or calling\u00a0the\u00a0police.\u00a0There\u00a0are\u00a0plenty\u00a0of\u00a0reports\u00a0of\u00a0our youth being\u00a0victimized\u00a0in fights\u00a0and stabbings\u00a0as\u00a0their peers just\u00a0stand by\u00a0and\u00a0casually\u00a0film\u00a0their plight.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0the\u00a0age\u00a0of\u00a0social media, this is\u00a0a\u00a0brutal reality for far\u00a0too many parents\u00a0across\u00a0the\u00a0country.\u00a0The\u00a0police frequently identify<\/a> deceased persons\u00a0and locate\u00a0their parents long\u00a0after clips\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0crime scene\u00a0have\u00a0already been uploaded\u00a0and circulated online for everyone\u00a0to\u00a0see.<\/p>\n

On Feb. 25, Birmingham mother Gail Maddox got\u00a0the\u00a0text every parent dreads\u00a0the\u00a0most. Her 20-year-old daughter Mahogany Jackson said she was being held hostage\u00a0and implored her mom\u00a0to\u00a0call\u00a0the\u00a0police.<\/p>\n

That was just\u00a0the\u00a0beginning\u00a0of\u00a0Gail\u2019s\u00a0agony. Not 24 hours later, police found Mahogany\u2019s body.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But something monstrous compounded this tragedy: videos\u00a0of\u00a0Mahogany\u2019s rape,\u00a0torture\u00a0and death\u00a0appeared\u00a0and circulated online. Her sadistic kidnappers\u00a0and killers<\/a> recorded\u00a0their\u00a0atrocities for\u00a0the\u00a0world\u00a0to\u00a0see.<\/p>\n

Gail had\u00a0already suffered\u00a0the\u00a0fate that no parent should ever\u00a0have\u00a0to\u00a0endure,\u00a0the\u00a0death\u00a0of\u00a0her child. But with this barbarity published online, she suffers that indescribable pain over\u00a0and over\u00a0again with each share\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0video.<\/p>\n

People\u00a0actually sent\u00a0the\u00a0horrifying footage\u00a0to\u00a0Mahogany\u2019s family,\u00a0as if\u00a0they needed\u00a0to\u00a0see it. “That\u2019s my child. Please\u00a0stop. I can\u2019t take it,\u2019\u2019 Gail\u00a0pleaded.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0have\u00a0lived\u00a0the\u00a0moment\u00a0of\u00a0unspeakable shock\u00a0and grief when my own daughter was\u00a0shot dead\u00a0at just 19, killed by\u00a0a\u00a0stray bullet\u00a0as she was sitting with friends in\u00a0a\u00a0car being filled up with gas. I know what Gail suffered in losing her daughter,\u00a0and I regularly counsel\u00a0and console other parents walking\u00a0the\u00a0same path\u00a0of\u00a0grief.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0also work\u00a0to\u00a0strengthen community relationships with\u00a0the\u00a0police<\/a>.\u00a0And I understand that in one sense, this video\u00a0of\u00a0Mahogany\u2019s\u00a0torture being made public\u00a0allowed\u00a0the\u00a0police\u00a0to\u00a0identify\u00a0the\u00a0defendants\u00a0and make\u00a0a\u00a0quick\u00a0arrest in justice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So I will speak for Gail,\u00a0and for\u00a0all\u00a0parents\u00a0of\u00a0murdered children:<\/p>\n

If you see video\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0murder or\u00a0torture online \u2013 posted by\u00a0the\u00a0perpetrator,\u00a0an\u00a0accomplice, or\u00a0a\u00a0bystander who thinks it\u2019s sport \u2013\u00a0and you\u00a0casually\u00a0share this video, know that you\u00a0are\u00a0an\u00a0accomplice\u00a0to\u00a0this crime. Know that you\u00a0are giving\u00a0the\u00a0perpetrators\u00a0the\u00a0notoriety\u00a0they crave.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And if you see this content\u00a0and do nothing\u00a0about it \u2013 if you don\u2019t share it with law enforcement or request it be removed from\u00a0the\u00a0platform \u2013 know that you\u00a0are part\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0problem.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0dissemination\u00a0and sale\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0video<\/a> online was\u00a0another level\u00a0of\u00a0evil.\u00a0 The\u00a0defendants\u00a0have\u00a0the\u00a0nerves\u00a0to\u00a0call\u00a0themselves\u00a0the\u00a0“Yes Lord” gang.\u00a0 Their\u00a0filming\u00a0of\u00a0their\u00a0atrocities is\u00a0the\u00a0spineless sadism\u00a0of\u00a0persons walking\u00a0around impersonating human beings.<\/p>\n

I challenge municipalities\u00a0to\u00a0prosecute individuals who transmit such videos. States such as Alabama\u00a0have\u00a0prohibitions on\u00a0the\u00a0dissemination\u00a0of\u00a0revenge porn, which is defined in\u00a0Alabama\u00a0as “[d]istributing\u00a0a\u00a0private image with intent\u00a0to\u00a0harass, threaten, coerce, or intimidate\u00a0the\u00a0person depicted.” That definitely sounds like this is\u00a0applicable\u00a0to\u00a0Mahogany\u2019s case.<\/p>\n

And parents, please form your children\u00a0to\u00a0be leaders\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0stop\u00a0violence\u00a0themselves when\u00a0they can or call\u00a0the\u00a0police. Raise\u00a0them\u00a0to\u00a0have\u00a0the\u00a0basic decency never\u00a0to\u00a0film someone else\u2019s injury or death for sport.<\/p>\n

Social media platforms<\/a> should proactively regulate\u00a0and\u00a0stop\u00a0the\u00a0circulation\u00a0of\u00a0recorded\u00a0violence. Community moderation is commonplace,\u00a0and in\u00a0these cases it is\u00a0a\u00a0matter\u00a0of\u00a0life or death.<\/p>\n

But so far\u00a0all\u00a0of\u00a0these recommendations\u00a0have\u00a0been negative.\u00a0There is\u00a0also\u00a0a\u00a0positive vision for our country\u2019s social media use.\u00a0We\u00a0can use\u00a0these platforms\u00a0to\u00a0heal ourselves\u00a0and each other,\u00a0to\u00a0spread messages\u00a0of\u00a0uplift\u00a0and mutual respect.<\/p>\n

On social media,\u00a0we\u00a0can rally\u00a0around family survivors\u00a0of\u00a0violence\u00a0and provide\u00a0them with\u00a0the\u00a0emotional\u00a0and material resources\u00a0they need\u00a0to\u00a0cope with\u00a0the\u00a0grief\u00a0and rage\u00a0of\u00a0sudden loss.<\/p>\n

I personally\u00a0have\u00a0shared survivors\u2019 tips on LinkedIn\u00a0and Facebook. I\u2019ve spoken\u00a0at every opportunity\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0suffering that mothers like me face,\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0urgent need for\u00a0a\u00a0solution\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0violence\u00a0that\u2019s tearing our neighborhoods\u00a0apart<\/a>.<\/p>\n
