Fear\u00a0is\u00a0intended to warn us about imminent danger. It\u00a0is\u00a0a survival mechanism<\/a>, connected directly to\u00a0the\u00a0fight or flight response as\u00a0our\u00a0bodies produce adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol in response to perceived danger.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, fear\u00a0is\u00a0also contagious, and so we may become worried about dangers that are not imminent, with no\u00a0one to fight and nowhere to physically flee.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0is\u00a0the\u00a0problem that\u00a0the\u00a0current situation in\u00a0the\u00a0Middle East\u00a0is\u00a0having\u00a0on\u00a0many\u00a0of\u00a0us in other parts\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0world, including\u00a0the\u00a0U.S., and it\u00a0is\u00a0not an accident. Hamas, as a terrorist group<\/a>,\u00a0is\u00a0using fear to control, fear to create power and\u00a0impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Israel has been trying to figure out an effective way to respond, but hasn\u2019t fully succeeded yet in meeting Hamas head-on, in mounting an invasion to retrieve\u00a0the\u00a0hostages, or in stabilizing\u00a0the\u00a0region.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As\u00a0the\u00a0humanitarian disaster in Gaza grows, so does\u00a0the\u00a0uncertainty in\u00a0the\u00a0world, which generates even more fear. This\u00a0is\u00a0exactly\u00a0the\u00a0result that terrorists are trying to achieve. In this sense, Hamas\u00a0is\u00a0winning<\/a>.<\/p>\n

People have lived in fear before.\u00a0The\u00a0world narrowly avoided defeat at\u00a0the\u00a0hands\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Axis powers in World War II, when\u00a0the\u00a0Manhattan Project\u00a0here\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0U.S. famously beat\u00a0the\u00a0Germans in\u00a0the\u00a0race to develop\u00a0the\u00a0atomic bomb.\u00a0In\u00a0the\u00a0United States during\u00a0the\u00a0war, many were deeply shaken by Pearl Harbor yet reassured by\u00a0the\u00a0distance\u00a0the\u00a0Pacific Ocean provided from Japan, and the Atlantic Ocean provided from the war in Europe.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0nuclear age followed, and I remember growing up as a young child with a feeling\u00a0of\u00a0foreboding each time I had to hide under my desk at school during an air raid drill. We wondered if we would ever make it to adulthood without a nuclear bomb going\u00a0off. My wife experienced\u00a0the\u00a0same nuclear fears growing up in\u00a0the\u00a0Soviet Union, where many buildings, including hers, had bomb shelters attached to\u00a0them.<\/p>\n

We managed to make it through\u00a0the\u00a0Cold War era, and post 9-11<\/a>,\u00a0our\u00a0national psyche was punctured by what we called\u00a0the\u00a0first attack\u00a0on\u00a0our\u00a0soil. It\u00a0is\u00a0important to all Americans that we feel secure in\u00a0our\u00a0borders, which\u00a0is\u00a0one\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0reasons\u00a0the\u00a0current porous border with Mexico bothers so many. And technology has rendered\u00a0the\u00a0physical separation that\u00a0the\u00a0oceans provide us less reassuring.<\/p>\n

But no matter how unsafe we may feel, it\u00a0is\u00a0greatly exaggerated compared with what\u00a0the\u00a0Middle East\u00a0is\u00a0going through.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Our\u00a0experience\u00a0here\u00a0is\u00a0not relatable with what\u00a0is\u00a0going\u00a0on\u00a0in\u00a0Israel, where\u00a0the\u00a0entire population must evade rocket attacks by hiding in bomb shelters<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0a daily basis with mere seconds to respond. Now\u00a0that they have lost\u00a0their secure borders,\u00a0Israelis feel even less secure. Or in Gaza, with no food or clean water or electricity, with brutal terrorists surrounding you and subjugating you.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0is\u00a0what living in fear means.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fear\u00a0is\u00a0connected directly to instability and\u00a0uncertainty. It feeds\u00a0off a state\u00a0of\u00a0not knowing what\u00a0is\u00a0coming next or what you can do to prevent or control it. This\u00a0is\u00a0the\u00a0direction\u00a0the\u00a0world may be heading right now, into a deepening cycle\u00a0of\u00a0worry.<\/p>\n

At this time, it\u00a0is\u00a0more important than ever to strengthen family ties and friendships<\/a>, to practice kindness and forgiveness and to find courageous, confident leaders to guide us.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rational thought and risk assessment\u00a0will never be able to think us past a time\u00a0of\u00a0great foreboding and destabilization. Our\u00a0brains are not built to withstand\u00a0our\u00a0fears, but we can rely\u00a0on\u00a0more positive emotions to take\u00a0their place.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Building a network\u00a0of\u00a0faith and support and courage can help us survive\u00a0these\u00a0uncertain\u00a0times.<\/p>\n
