Marvin Jones<\/a> announced Tuesday on Instagram that he was “stepping away” to “take care of personal family matters.”<\/p>\n

Shortly afterward, the Detroit Lions<\/a> released him.<\/p>\n

Jones returned to the team over the offseason for a second stint with the organization \u2013 he was a healthy scratch this past weekend against the Baltimore Ravens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I just want to say that I have so much love and respect for the Ford family, the city of Detroit, my teammates and coaches. To be brief, I am stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters,” he posted with a caption<\/a> that read, “With love,” along with a heart emoji. “Although this was no easy decision, I cannot be the player\/person that I need to be for this team as well as tend to my family from afar. This organization has been amazing, showing love and support for myself and my family over the years, and this time is no different. To my brothers and coaches, I will be rooting for you every step of the way! This is the year! Go get it!!! Love and respect to ALL!”<\/p>\n

Head coach Dan Campbell said Monday that he didn’t think that Jones’ absence was “serious,” but he did not go into detail about the situation.<\/p>\n

Jones signed for $3 million after spending the previous two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 33-year-old was a fifth-round pick in 2012 by the Cincinnati Bengals<\/a>. He inked a five-year, $40 million deal with the Lions before the 2016 season and broke out the next year when he set a career high with 1,101 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.<\/p>\n

In six games played this year, he had five catches for 35 yards on 10 targets, searching for usage behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs and, since he returned from suspension, Jameson Williams.<\/p>\n

Jones has 547 receptions for 7,421 yards and 58 touchdowns in his career.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
