Following a contentious confirmation hearing, the Senate voted 52 to 48 to confirm Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court on this day in history,<\/a> Oct. 15, 1991.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In July 1991, Thurgood Marshall, the first African American to sit on the Supreme Court<\/a>, announced his retirement after 34 years, History.com cited.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, President George H. W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, nominated Thomas, who at that time was a 43-year-old African American judge known for his conservative beliefs, to fill Justice Marshall\u2019s seat, the same source indicated.<\/p>\n

Thomas had served as chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission during President Ronald Reagan<\/a>\u2019s administration; in 1990 President Bush appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals, several sources stated.<\/p>\n

As the confirmation hearings for Thomas\u2019 Supreme Court nomination began, he evaded controversy over his conservative views on topics such as abortion<\/a> by refusing to state a clear political position, according to History.com.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Many believed he would be confirmed to the Supreme Court quickly \u2014 until Anita Hill, a former aide, who had become a professor of law at the University of Oklahoma, accused him of sexual harassment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hill’s allegations, made public on Oct. 5, 1991, totally changed the nature and tenor of the nomination, according to Congressional Quarterly.<\/p>\n

Within days, the Senate<\/a>‘s judicial screening process was under attack and Thomas\u2019 career and reputation were thrown into doubt, the same source recounted.<\/p>\n

Beginning on Oct. 11, 1991, the Senate Judiciary Committee held four days of publicly televised hearings on Hill\u2019s charges.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Americans were shocked by both the frankness of Hill\u2019s testimony and the unsympathetic response of the all-male committee, some of whom were openly antagonistic toward Hill, according to History.com.<\/p>\n

During her hours of testimony, Hill recounted stories of how Thomas had humiliated her with lewd comments and unwanted advances, according to Congressional Quarterly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“My efforts to change the subject were rarely successful,” Hill testified at that time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thomas denied the charges, according to multiple sources.<\/p>\n

Following the committee\u2019s hearings, the Senate vote was 52\u201348.<\/p>\n

Eleven Democrats and 41 Republicans supported Thomas and 46 Democrats and two Republicans opposing him, according to Congressional Quarterly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“That was the closest vote in favor of a Supreme Court nominee in more than a century,” the same source said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Justice Thomas was born in the Pinpoint community near Savannah, Georgia<\/a>, on June 23, 1948.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1971 and from Yale Law School in 1974, according to the Supreme Court Historical Society.\u00a0<\/p>\n

From 1981 to 1982, he served as assistant secretary for civil rights, U.S. Department of Education, and as chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 1982 to 1990.\u00a0<\/p>\n

From 1990 to 1991, he served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, according to the official site of the Supreme Court of the United States.<\/p>\n

Justice Thomas took his seat on the Supreme Court of the United States on Oct. 23, 1991, where he currently serves.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thomas is the longest-serving current justice.<\/p>\n

He is also the only current justice who took his seat before 2000, according to multiple sources.<\/p>\n
