A paddleboarder in Scotland had an unexpected run-in with the world’s second-largest shark<\/a>, which circled him as he recorded the “eerie” encounter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I left Dunbar Harbor and had only been on the paddle for 20 minutes when I noticed a bloom of plankton in the water,” 28-year-old Jacob Allen told Kennedy News.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Then, one of the sharks started to head towards me in my direction, which made me feel a bit apprehensive at first,” he said.<\/p>\n

The paddleboarder said he was off the Scottish coast in East Lothian\u2019s Dunbar Harbor last week when he encountered a 25-foot basking shark. Basking sharks typically live in cool<\/a> water and are considered the second-largest fish in the world, reaching up to 40 feet in length, according to Oceana.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Allen said that, due to the “weather conditions and lack of current,” he was able to remain still and did not disturb the water.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It was clearly close enough to know I was there,” he told Kennedy News. “My apprehensiveness of whether it knew I was there was fading because it had to know I was there. It was so close.”<\/p>\n

The video shows Allen saying, “That is not what you see on TV,” remarking that his “heart is beating so fast.”<\/p>\n

Basking sharks, though menacing in size, are mostly harmless. As filter feeders, the sharks are known for their massive mouths that can open up to 3 feet wide.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Allen, who FaceTimed his fianc\u00e9e and young son during the encounter, was able to dip his camera under the water and capture footage of the shark’s open mouth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“What struck me the most was the dark Scottish waters<\/a> and then just seeing that large mouth come towards me,” said Allen.<\/p>\n

“It was pretty eerie.<\/p>\n

“It was the most amazing wildlife encounter<\/a> I\u2019ve ever had, and I was exceptionally lucky to have the experience,” Allen said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
