A Rhode Island woman is dead<\/a> after contracting a rare case ot the tick-borne Powassan virus disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Rhode Island Department of Health said the virus had been detected in a Washington County resident over 80.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She developed neurological symptoms and passed away in mid-July.<\/p>\n

Laboratory testing had been conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which confirmed the finding earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Powassan virus is spread to people through the bite of an infected tick.<\/a><\/p>\n

The disease is mainly found in the Northeast and the Great Lakes regions of the U.S.<\/p>\n

While cases are rare, the CDC notes that the reported number has increased in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

More than 239 cases have been reported in the U.S. over the past decade, from 2013 to 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This year, there have been 11 Powassan virus disease cases<\/a> across the U.S.<\/p>\n

Initial symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting and weakness.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The disease usually progresses to meningoencephalitis, including meningeal signs, altered mental status, seizures, difficulty understanding or speaking, muscular weakness or paralysis, movement disorders or cranial nerve palsies.<\/p>\n

People with severe Powassan often need to be hospitalized.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There is no vaccine or treatment for the disease, so preventing exposure to ticks<\/a> is the best strategy to avoid this disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
