American cooking expert, television personality and cookbook author Julia Child died on this day in history<\/a>, Aug. 13, 2004, in Santa Barbara, California. <\/p>\n

Known for her promotion of traditional French cuisine<\/a>, especially through her programs on public television, Child taught millions of Americans how to cook and helped elevate the nation’s culinary standards, according to NPR.<\/p>\n

Child started her kitchen revolution in 1961 when she published, along with co-authors Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, the classic, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” the same source indicated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Her subsequent cookbooks included “The French Chef Cookbook”; “Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Vol. II,” with Beck; “From Julia Child\u2019s Kitchen”; “Julia Child & Company”; “Julia Child & More Company”; and “The Way to Cook,” in October 1989.<\/p>\n

Child had a goal of promoting classic cooking methods and ideologies. <\/p>\n

“In spite of food fads, fitness programs and health concerns<\/a>, we must never lose sight of a beautifully conceived meal,” Child is quoted as saying in “The Way to Cook.”<\/p>\n

Child was 51 when she debuted on television<\/a> as “The French Chef.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Her father was a banker and landowner, while her mother hailed from the Weston family, proprietors of the Weston Paper Company in Massachusetts, the same source recounted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Child graduated from Smith College.<\/p>\n

Following World War II<\/a>, she married Paul Child, whom she had met while working for the Office of Strategic Services in India.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Paul Child worked for the U.S. Foreign Service, and in 1948, the couple was posted to Paris for his work.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At this time, Child was approached by television executives to host a cooking show, “The French Chef,” based on her book, the same source chronicled.<\/p>\n

More than two decades after the last show was filmed, the series remained a hit for PBS and cable, noted multiple sources. <\/p>\n

Child received several honors, including a Peabody Award (1964), an Emmy Award<\/a> (1966) for her television work and a National Book Award in 1980 for her book, “Julia Child and More Company,” published by Knopf.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Child also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003 from President George W. Bush.\u00a0<\/p>\n
