{"id":75938,"date":"2023-08-10T02:00:47","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T06:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/new-ai-tech-aims-to-detect-the-origin-of-cancers-for-optimal-treatments-an-important-step-75938"},"modified":"2023-08-10T02:00:47","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T06:00:47","slug":"new-ai-tech-aims-to-detect-the-origin-of-cancers-for-optimal-treatments-an-important-step","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/new-ai-tech-aims-to-detect-the-origin-of-cancers-for-optimal-treatments-an-important-step-75938","title":{"rendered":"New AI tech aims to detect the origin of cancers for optimal treatments: \u2018An important step\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>For a small percentage of cancer patients, doctors are unable to determine where in the body the disease originated.<\/p>\n<p>To help pinpoint the origin of the cancers of unknown primary (CUP), researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/tech\/artificial-intelligence\"><u>artificial intelligence model<\/u><\/a> that analyzes the patient&#8217;s genetic information \u2014 and predicts where the tumor first appeared.<\/p>\n<p>When using the new AI model for 900 patients with cancers of unknown origin, researchers found that they could accurately classify at least 40% of tumors, according to a study published in Nature Medicine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/tech\/what-is-ai-artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This information could help doctors recommend the best targeted treatments for these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/cancer\"><u>cancer patients<\/u><\/a>, researchers say.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our study showed that OncoNPC, the AI model that we developed, can leverage routinely collected genomic data to assist in clinical decision-making for patients with cancer of unknown primary (CUP) tumors, which are conventionally difficult to diagnose and have limited treatment options,&#8221; Intae Moon, an MIT graduate student in electrical engineering and computer science who is lead author of the study, told Fox News Digital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We demonstrated that CUP tumors share genetic and prognostic characteristics with their predicted cancer types and may benefit from currently existing treatments guided by OnoNPC predictions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/ai-technology-catches-cancer-early-ezra-full-body-mri-scanner\"><strong><u>AI TECHNOLOGY CATCHES CANCER BEFORE SYMPTOMS WITH EZRA, A FULL-BODY MRI SCANNER<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The researchers also found that 15% of the patients could have received targeted treatments if the origin of their cancer had been detected.<\/p>\n<p>Although the researchers used data from multiple centers to train its AI model, Moon pointed out that the clinical data used for their detailed analysis came from just one institution.<\/p>\n<p>This could limit how well the findings apply to other settings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Another limitation is that a large portion (83.2%) of the patients in the training data were White, which could mean the tool may be more accurate for White patients,&#8221; Moon said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though it still performed reasonably well for other ethnicities, a more thorough investigation is required to ensure that the model is benefiting a diverse patient population.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/ai-tech-aims-detect-breast-cancer-mimicking-radiologists-eye-movements-critical-friend\"><strong><u>AI TECH AIMS TO DETECT BREAST CANCER BY MIMICKING RADIOLOGISTS\u2019 EYE MOVEMENTS: &#8216;A CRITICAL FRIEND&#8217;<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, only 22 of the most common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/medical-research\/cancer-research\"><u>cancer types<\/u><\/a> were considered for classifying tumors \u2014 which means if a tumor belongs to an unlisted type, predictions could be less certain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope to gradually resolve this as we gather and collect more comprehensive data,&#8221; Moon said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/ai-shown-predict-risk-pancreatic-cancer-symptoms-appear\"><strong><u>AI SHOWN TO PREDICT RISK OF PANCREATIC CANCER WELL BEFORE SYMPTOMS APPEAR<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Finally, though our findings show that patients with CUPs classified by our algorithm have a better clinical response to the \u2018matching\u2019 treatments, this is ultimately still a retrospective analysis,&#8221; he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A prospective randomized study would be needed to confirm that the relationship is causal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Moon noted that the researchers see OncoNPC as an algorithm to be used in conjunction with conventional cancer treatments \u2014 not as a replacement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important to validate our study results across different institutions, which we see as crucial next steps,&#8221; Moon said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tinglong Dai, professor of operations management and business analytics at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/northeast\/maryland\"><u>Baltimore, Maryland<\/u><\/a>, was not part of the MIT research.
