{"id":75542,"date":"2023-08-05T16:37:19","date_gmt":"2023-08-05T20:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/judge-blocks-illinois-law-targeting-crisis-pregnancy-centers-calling-it-a-violation-of-the-first-amendment-75542"},"modified":"2023-08-05T16:37:19","modified_gmt":"2023-08-05T20:37:19","slug":"judge-blocks-illinois-law-targeting-crisis-pregnancy-centers-calling-it-a-violation-of-the-first-amendment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/judge-blocks-illinois-law-targeting-crisis-pregnancy-centers-calling-it-a-violation-of-the-first-amendment-75542","title":{"rendered":"Judge blocks Illinois law targeting crisis pregnancy centers, calling it a violation of the First Amendment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A federal judge Thursday temporarily blocked a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/midwest\/illinois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Illinois law<\/a> that targeted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/mothers-share-crisis-pregnancy-centers-helped-walk-away-abortion-huge-enlightenment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crisis pregnancy centers<\/a>, saying it violated free speech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Iain Johnston, who was appointed by former President Trump, called the law &#8220;painfully and blatantly a violation of the First Amendment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ruling came after four hours of testimony from pro-life advocates who said the law had infringed on their free speech and ability to hand out literature that gives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/judiciary\/abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alternatives to abortion.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s going to stop us from offering mothers a choice,&#8221; Kevin Rilott, director of the Rockford Family Initiative and a plaintiff in the lawsuit, said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/illinois-gov-pritzker-signs-sweeping-abortion-protections-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ILLINOIS GOV. PRITZKER SIGNS SWEEPING ABORTION PROTECTIONS INTO LAW<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He said before the law passed around 100 people regularly attended their prayer vigils, but that dwindled to around 30 afterward.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On July 27, Gov.\u00a0J.B. Pritzker\u00a0signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/new-illinois-law-gives-government-increased-power-target-pregnancy-centers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deceptive Practices of Limited Services Pregnancy Centers Act<\/a>\u00a0that allows the state attorney general to crack down on crisis pregnancy centers deemed to be using &#8220;deceptive tactics&#8221; to influence pregnant women who come to them to not get abortions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Women need access to comprehensive,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/regulation\/health-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fact-based health care<\/a>\u00a0when making critical decisions about their own health \u2014 not manipulation or misinformation from politically motivated, nonmedical actors,&#8221; Pritzker said in a statement when he signed the law. &#8220;By empowering the attorney general&#8217;s office to battle deceptive practices, we&#8217;re ensuring Illinoisans can make their own decisions about their bodies using accurate and safe information.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/texas-judge-rules-states-abortion-law-too-restrictive-women-pregnancy-complications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TEXAS JUDGE RULES STATE&#8217;S ABORTION LAW TOO RESTRICTIVE FOR WOMEN WITH PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The law would allow the state attorney general to investigate complaints about crisis pregnancy centers\u00a0and strengthens the attorney general\u2019s authority to prosecute incidences of consumer fraud in such cases. Violators of the law could face up to a $50,000 fine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was very heartening to know that the judge recognized that our clients are facing a credible threat, that their speech is being chilled, and that\u2019s really important,&#8221; Attorney Peter Breen of the Thomas More Society, who represents the plaintiffs, said after the ruling.\u00a0&#8220;No matter which side of the abortion issue you\u2019re on, we don\u2019t silence speech.
