{"id":74311,"date":"2023-07-23T19:11:04","date_gmt":"2023-07-23T23:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/listeria-outbreak-kills-three-adults-in-washington-state-health-department-confirms-74311"},"modified":"2023-07-23T19:11:04","modified_gmt":"2023-07-23T23:11:04","slug":"listeria-outbreak-kills-three-adults-in-washington-state-health-department-confirms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/listeria-outbreak-kills-three-adults-in-washington-state-health-department-confirms-74311","title":{"rendered":"Listeria outbreak kills three adults in Washington state, health department confirms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Three people have died from a listeria outbreak in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/west\/washington\"><u>state of Washington<\/u><\/a>, the Department of Health there reported on July 21.<\/p>\n<p>A total of five adults over 60 years of age are known to have developed &#8220;severe infections&#8221; from Listeria monocytogenes (listeriosis), including the three who died.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All five had &#8220;compromised immune systems,&#8221; the health department said in the public statement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/prevent-treat-illnesses-most-common-summer-months\"><strong><u>HOW TO PREVENT AND TREAT ILLNESSES THAT ARE MOST COMMON DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Listeria is a serious infection that most commonly comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/infectious-disease\/foodborne-illness\"><u>food that is contaminated<\/u><\/a> with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n<p>Two of the infected adults were female and three were male.<\/p>\n<p>Four of them were from Pierce County and one was in Thurston County.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington State Department of Health is investigating the infections, along with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and Thurston County Public Health and Social Services.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/food-poisoning-recently-sick-restaurant-workers-might-blame-cdc\"><strong><u>FOOD POISONING RECENTLY? SICK RESTAURANT WORKERS MIGHT BE TO BLAME, SAYS CDC<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;WA DOH is working with Pierce and Thurston County local health jurisdictions to gather information from interviews with patients and their families to help identify any common exposures,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The individuals likely contracted the infection from the same food source based on genetic fingerprinting results, according to the statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They all became ill between February 27 and June 30.<\/p>\n<p>Fox News Digital reached out to the Washington State Department of Health for comment, but had not heard back by the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p>Around 1,600 people develop listeriosis each year in the U.S., resulting in around 260 deaths, per the CDC\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/enoki-mushrooms-linked-listeria-outbreak-states-public-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ENOKI MUSHROOMS LINKED TO LISTERIA OUTBREAK IN TWO STATES: PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those who face the highest risk include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/reproductive-health\/pregnancy\"><u>pregnant women<\/u><\/a>, newborn babies, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems.<\/p>\n<p>People outside the high-risk groups rarely display symptoms, the CDC stated.<\/p>\n<p>Common symptoms among pregnant women include fever, muscle aches, fatigue and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/respiratory-health\/cold-and-flu\"><u>flu-like symptoms<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In severe cases, the infection can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth or potentially fatal infection in the baby.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/contaminated-meat-could-cause-half-million-urinary-tract-infections-year-study-finds\"><strong><u>MEAT CONTAMINATED WITH E. COLI COULD CAUSE HALF A MILLION URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS EACH YEAR, STUDY FINDS<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Symptoms in other groups may also include headache, stiff neck, balance problems, seizures and confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Among those who are not pregnant, the death rate from listeriosis is about 5%, per the CDC.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/digestive-health\"><u>Intestinal illness<\/u><\/a>, including diarrhea and vomiting, can also occur for one to three days, usually starting within 24 hours of eating contaminated food.<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosis of listeriosis is confirmed via laboratory tests of the blood, spinal fluid or placenta.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For those with invasive illness, the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/healthy-living\/medications\"><u>common treatment is antibiotics<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent infection, people in high-risk groups should avoid eating foods that are more likely to be contaminated, according to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\"><strong><u>CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These include soft cheeses; meats, cheeses and salads from the deli; deli meats, cold cuts, hot dogs, and fermented or dry sausages; p\u00e2t\u00e9 or meat spreads; cold-smoked fish; sprouts; melons; and raw (unpasteurized) milk and raw milk products.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2022, it was reported that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/infectious-disease\/outbreaks\"><u>listeria outbreak<\/u><\/a> caused at least one death and one pregnancy loss, with 16 confirmed cases across six states.<\/p>\n<p>That outbreak was linked to sliced deli meats and cheeses, the CDC stated on its website.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/listeria-outbreak-kills-three-adults-washington-state-health-department-confirms\">Source &#8211; https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/listeria-outbreak-kills-three-adults-washington-state-health-department-confirms <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three people have died from a listeria outbreak in the state of Washington, the Department of Health there reported on July 21.
