This week\u2019s congressional hearing “interrogations” of FBI Director Chris Wray<\/a> about the politicization of his agency offered viewers no surprises, no new info\u2014and no remorse. The witness claimed the FBI is “absolutely not” protecting the Bidens and lawmakers grandstanded with set-up questions that fell along political lines.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t always this way.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0U.S. Sen. Estes Kefauver\u00a0launched his investigation into organized crime in 1950, the Kefauver Committee\u2019s televised hearings gripped the nation. Long before “The Godfather” and “The Sopranos,” many Americans were unaware that gangsters and mafia\u00a0were emboldened by their control of politicians at the local level.<\/p>\n

FBI DIRECTOR WRAY SAYS IDEA HE IS TARGETING CONSERVATIVES IS ‘SOMEWHAT INSANE’<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

While some witnesses attempted to match wits, Kefauver\u2019s cross-examinations were devastating. Americans watched as vicious mobster Frank Costello<\/a> “twisted and clenched,” according to one account, “revealing [his] inner fears and confusion.” The committee even jailed Costello for contempt after he became belligerent and refused to answer questions.<\/p>\n

Pledging\u00a0to lead a “no stones unturned, no holds barred, right down the middle of the road, let the chips fall where they may” investigation, Kefauver\u2019s work on that committee was the beginning of the end of the American mafia\u2019s unbridled power.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what\u2019s missing in today\u2019s congressional hearings\u2014a real and ruthless pursuit of the truth. We need powerful cross-examinations. What we get, though, are political speeches.<\/p>\n

GOP REP CHALLENGES WRAY OVER COURT RULING ON FBI SUPPRESSION OF CONSERVATIVE FREE SPEECH: \u2018YOU SHOULD READ IT\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

FBI Director Christopher Wray<\/a> attempted to defend his agency\u2019s blatant politicization, selective enforcement actions and disparate treatment of defendants.<\/p>\n

But it wasn\u2019t much of a challenge. Republicans brought up the agency\u2019s missteps, including its targeting of faithful Catholics and worried parents, as well misleading the public on the Hunter Biden laptop, among other things. Wray was unphased.<\/p>\n

“Today\u2019s FBI leaders<\/a> reflect the best of our organization,” he declared. “That\u2019s the real FBI.”<\/p>\n

What we did not see were serious responses from Wray, even when the questions were simple. And Wray\u2019s supporters had his back. As in the truly disturbing hearing with\u00a0smirking ex-FBI agent Peter Strzok<\/a>, Democrats sidestepped the facts and time after time, let Wray off the hook.<\/p>\n

But quite frankly, a lack of courtroom skills hobbled Republican efforts to get to the truth.<\/p>\n

This is nothing new, of course. The\u00a0Senate hearings\u00a0into Supreme Court <\/a>nomination of Brett Kavanaugh were like a tennis match\u2014taking place on two different tennis courts. Democrats blasted Kavanaugh and\u00a0coddled his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, while the Republicans tried to walk a tightrope of poking holes in the accuser\u2019s testimony and not appearing to bully witnesses.<\/p>\n

Even\u00a0Vox claimed at the time\u00a0that the hearings weren\u2019t “about finding the truth.” Instead, Vox termed the committee\u2019s treatment of Ford a “cross-examination.”<\/p>\n

With respect\u2014and as a former U.S. attorney\u2014little occurred in those hearings that could be called a competent cross-examination. Not a single committee vote was changed.<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s House hearing with Director Wray did more to obfuscate the truth than reveal it. We gleaned few answers from Wray, and the rest was trampled by political posturing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s\u00a0clear evidence\u00a0that the Department of Justice<\/a> is violating its own policies in the Hunter Biden investigation. And there\u2019s evidence from whistleblowers that the FBI leadership is “rotted at its core” with a “systemic culture of unaccountability,” according to the House Judiciary Committee report.<\/p>\n

Last century\u2019s confidence and legal prowess in the Kefauver congressional hearings identified criminals and criminal activity with a road map to convictions and meaningful policy change.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The real purpose of these hearings is the pursuit of truth, and it\u2019s about time lawmakers rethink their roles and sharpen their legal wits.<\/p>\n
