U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe<\/a> said in a recent interview that questioning transgender participation in women\u2019s sports is harmful.<\/p>\n

Rapinoe mentioned remarks made by tennis legend Martina Navratilova and ESPN anchor Sage Steele, who believe transgender women should not be competing against biological females in sports. Rapinoe also does not appreciate comedian Dave Chappelle\u2019s jokes about the issue.<\/p>\n

“I don\u2019t want to mince words about it,” Rapinoe told Time magazine in an interview published Monday. “Dave Chappelle making jokes about trans people directly leads to violence, whether it\u2019s verbal or otherwise, against trans people.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“When Martina or Sage or whoever are talking about this, people aren\u2019t hearing it just in the context of elite sports. They\u2019re saying, \u2018The rest of my life, this is how I\u2019m going to treat trans people.\u2019”<\/p>\n

Navratilova has been an activist for the gay community but\u00a0has been against transgender<\/a>\u00a0women competing against biological women in sports.<\/p>\n

In March, she applauded World Athletics for adopting a policy to exclude transgender female athletes from women\u2019s competitions. She called it a “step in the right direction.”<\/p>\n

“In the wake of\u00a0World Athletics\u2019 announcement<\/a>, I think the best idea would be to have \u2018biological female\u2019 and \u2018biological girls\u2019 categories and then an \u2018open\u2019 category,” she wrote in an op-ed in The Times of UK.<\/p>\n

Steele has expressed support for former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines for her advocacy to keep women\u2019s sports fair. Steele declared that she stands with Gaines and called what has occurred with trans people overtaking women\u2019s sports “ridiculous,” “heartbreaking,” “difficult to watch” and added the hashtag “savewomensports.”<\/p>\n

For Rapinoe, she went as far as to say that she would “absolutely” accept a transgender woman on the U.S. women\u2019s national team.<\/p>\n

“\u2018You\u2019re taking a “real” woman\u2019s place,\u2019 that\u2019s the part of the argument that\u2019s still extremely transphobic. I see trans women as real women,” she said. “What you\u2019re saying automatically in the argument\u2014you\u2019re sort of telling on yourself already\u2014is you don\u2019t believe these people are women. Therefore, they\u2019re taking the other spot. I don\u2019t feel that way.”<\/p>\n

Rapinoe was one of 40 professional athletes\u00a0to co-sign a letter to House lawmakers<\/a>\u00a0in April in opposition of the Protection of Girls and Women in Sports Act, arguing that the bill would exclude women and girls from getting “mental and physical health benefits.”<\/p>\n
