American progressives insist that the\u00a0American dream is dead. But for thousands of Chinese migrants<\/a> who have taken long and dangerous journeys through Latin America and eventually reached the U.S.-Mexico border, the American dream is alive and well and worth risking everything they have.<\/p>\n

Reuter\u00a0reports\u00a0that between October 2022 and March 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents apprehended more than 6,500 Chinese nationals at the U.S.-Mexico border, an increase of more than 15 times from the same period a year ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For Chinese nationals who seek to escape China, coming to the U.S. through Latin America<\/a> is a protracted, expensive and perilous journey.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 2,300-mile trek usually begins with Chinese nationals flying to Ecuador, one of the few South American countries they can enter visa-free. From Ecuador, Chinese with means typically pay about $60,000 or more for “more direct or safer smuggling routes, such as air passage to Mexico, where ‘snakehead agents\u2019 bribe customs officials to let Chinese in with forged travel documents,” according to\u00a0the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n

CHINESE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE CROSSING INTO US IN UNPRECEDENTED NUMBERS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Chinese nationals with lesser means usually pay between\u00a0$7,000 and $10,000\u00a0to have smugglers take them to the U.S.-Mexico border through more indirect routes. They must pass through some of the most dangerous areas, including the Dari\u00e9n Gap jungle and Mexico\u2019s notorious Highway 101, known as the “Highway of Death.” Chinese migrants are frequent victims of carjackings, robberies, sexual assaults and other violent crimes.<\/p>\n

Economic and political reasons drove these Chinese nationals to make a long and risky journey to the U.S. When China\u2019s current dictator Xi Jinping came to power in late 2012, he promised the nation\u2019s 1.4 billion people a “Chinese dream \u2013 to deliver prosperity and national rejuvenation.” Yet, the Chinese people soon realized Xi\u2019s “Chinese dream” was their nightmare.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Xi is the most cold-blooded dictator since Mao Zedong. He has ruthlessly suppressed\u00a0ethnic minorities,\u00a0religious believers,\u00a0political dissenters and\u00a0party officials. He also built a\u00a0mass surveillance state\u00a0to control the Chinese people\u2019s thoughts and behaviors.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To many Chinese people\u2019s further dismay, Xi\u00a0removed the presidential term limit\u00a0from China\u2019s constitution and became a dictator for life. His emphasis on indoctrinating Chinese youth from kindergarten to college with “red education,” promoting unyielding loyalty to himself and the Communist Party, reminds older generations of Mao\u2019s destructive Cultural Revolution.<\/p>\n

Most Chinese people accepted limited political freedom in exchange for economic prosperity. But under Xi\u2019s watch, China\u2019s economic growth has notably\u00a0slowed down, largely due to Xi\u2019s policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His\u00a0<\/strong>crackdown on some of the most successful\u00a0Chinese tech companies\u00a0and\u00a0business elites\u00a0eroded investors\u2019 confidence and dampened entrepreneur spirit. His\u00a0meddling with China\u2019s property market\u00a0led to the collapse of China\u2019s largest property company and depressed housing prices, and many Chinese saw their lives tied to unfinished housing projects.<\/p>\n

BIDEN ADMIN AGAIN INCREASES NUMBER OF MIGRANTS ALLOWED INTO US VIA CONTROVERSIAL APP<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The last straw for many Chinese, especially Chinese youth, was Xi\u2019s\u00a0brutally enforced “zero-COVID” policy<\/a>\u00a0during the previous three years, which has\u00a0devastated\u00a0China\u2019s economy and caused the Chinese people\u00a0unmentionable pain and suffering. After the Chinese youth in several big cities staged\u00a0“white paper” protests\u00a0late last year, the Chinese government reversed its COVID policy suddenly without much preparation or explanation, which led to a\u00a0chaotic\u00a0reopening and further eroded some people\u2019s last remaining confidence in Xi\u2019s leadership.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today, China\u2019s post-COVID economic recovery is\u00a0stalling,\u00a0and the unemployment rate for people aged 16\u201324 reached\u00a020.4%.<\/p>\n

The lack of political freedom and economic opportunities has prompted many Chinese to seek ways to leave China. China\u2019s upper class\u00a0led the migration wave, and the desire to leave China has trickled down to middle-class and ordinary Chinese citizens. One of the most popular internet terms on Chinese social media is\u00a0\u8d70\u7ebf, meaning to enter the U.S. illegally<\/a> through Latin America. It\u2019s “voting with their feet” with Chinese characteristics.<\/p>\n

Chinese people with lesser means and those who want to leave China soon opt for \u8d70\u7ebf, driven by the\u00a0long wait\u00a0for U.S. visas and the belief that the Biden administration\u2019s\u00a0lax border control\u00a0has made an illegal border crossing relatively consequence-free.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As more Chinese nationals who made it to the U.S. through\u00a0\u8d70\u7ebf\u00a0shared their experiences and tips online, more felt encouraged to follow suit, despite the dangers they may face. Although Chinese nationals constitute a small portion of all illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border, they represent a\u00a0fast-growing\u00a0subset.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While the rising number of illegal Chinese migrants has added complexity to our nation\u2019s current border crisis, they also represent a geopolitical opportunity with domestic political implications.\u00a0<\/p>\n

During the Cold War, President Lyndon Johnson used U.S. immigration policy to combat communism by offering\u00a0special treatment\u00a0to Cuban immigrants. Besides making tremendous contributions to America\u2019s economy, many Cuban immigrants have become one of America\u2019s\u00a0most vocal anti-communism political forces.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is in America\u2019s interest to apply the historical lesson learned from tailoring an immigration policy to support Cuban political refugees to today\u2019s Chinese migrants.<\/p>\n

Suppose the U.S. expands legal immigration to assist more Chinese who have risked everything to leave China to become Americans. Our nation will gain more productive and patriotic citizens and score significant geopolitical victories in that case, at the expense of Xi\u2019s “brain drain.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nothing will embarrass the Chinese Communist Party<\/a> (CCP) more than the image of Chinese Americans waving American flags and vowing to defend the U.S. Constitution. That same image will also send American progressives a powerful rebuttal: that the American dream is alive and continues to inspire freedom-loving people.<\/p>\n
