Christy Carlson Romano<\/a> is changing her relationship with being a celebrity.<\/p>\n

“I don\u2019t identify as a celebrity at all, by the way,” Romano said in an interview with Fox News Digital. “I think \u2018public person\u2019 probably makes more sense, or now content creator. I think that the term celebrity is so gross and outdated.<\/p>\n

“And it\u2019s also just extremely triggering because it adds that element of who are you and what\u2019s your relevancy and what\u2019s your value in life, and it\u2019s just extremely dehumanizing in some ways.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Romano has been redefining herself as a “public person” with her podcast company, PodCo, which she runs with husband Brendan Rooney, as well as her YouTube channel, social media<\/a> and a podcast she hosts called “Vulnerable with Christy Carlson Romano,” in which she regularly shares intimate details about her life as a child actor.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m not making these decisions spontaneously. I\u2019m very specific about what I\u2019m talking about because I can back it up,” she said. “If I can\u2019t back something up or if I\u2019m impulsive, I think as a female in media, you know, people can be pretty … I\u2019m trying very hard to keep my wits about me these days. So, yes, I\u2019m vulnerable, but I\u2019m also protected.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

One subject Romano can speak confidently about is being a child actor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old rose to fame on the Disney Channel series “Even Stevens,” playing older sister Ren Stevens to Shia LaBeouf\u2019s mischievous Louis Stevens. She also voiced the title character on the animated series “Kim Possible” for Disney.<\/p>\n

Romano has spoken passionately and openly about the pitfalls she faced after beginning her career so early, from personal to financial, and admits she still feels the effects.<\/p>\n

When she heard the story about Elle Fanning\u2019s recollection<\/a> of not getting a part and being called “unf—able” at age 16, it upset Romano.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m so angry,” Romano said when asked about the story. “I felt very triggered, I felt very helpless and hopeless in some ways because I was like, \u2018This just keeps happening.\u2019 These are people I consider my community.<\/p>\n

“We may not know each other, and at times a lot of us are isolated from our own experience, because how are we ever going to come together and know, \u2018Oh did you actually start at four years old?’ Oh yeah. \u2018Did you have a stage parent?’ Oh yeah. It\u2019s like, there\u2019s no, there\u2019s no meeting rooms for recovered child actors.”<\/p>\n

Romano has done her part as an advocate, vocalizing her concerns and experiences<\/a>, but notes that change is slow.<\/p>\n

“I don\u2019t think things are changing in that. I think until there\u2019s any kind of changing of the fundamental infrastructure, things can\u2019t change. Because we\u2019re working on outdated information on how kids are being treated on sets,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s not going to happen overnight. And it may not be something that\u2019s handleable amongst the union. It may be something that needs to be a little bit more in the federal space. I\u2019m not quite sure what we need to do for change, but there\u2019s definitely options.<\/p>\n

“Look, at the end of the day, these kids are union-paying members. And they\u2019re not getting protected by the union. They\u2019re not getting schooled enough directly from the union. They may have little workshops here and there, but they do not have enforcers. They don\u2019t have people that are enforcing protections, and that\u2019s the biggest problem.<\/p>\n

“We have this industry that benefits off of convenience. We want it loud, fast, funny and cheap, and we need it right now, and that\u2019s how productions work. It\u2019s not just a Nickelodeon problem, or a Paramount problem or whoever it is. It’s not one particular network\u2019s issue. It\u2019s an entire industry issue. Which is why it comes back down to either SAG or even child labor on a federal level. That\u2019s what I have experienced. I think that that\u2019s valuable. So, if I\u2019m talking about it, I\u2019m not trying to whistle blow, it\u2019s more or less me just advocating for change.”<\/p>\n

Even if change is slow, Romano is feeling a greater sense of camaraderie with her fellow child stars, including those who have podcasts with her company, like Joey, Matt and Andy Lawrence <\/a>on their “Brotherly Love” podcast, as well as rewatch podcasts about “Wizards of Waverly Place” and “Ned\u2019s Declassified School Survivor Guide,” hosted by cast members of those series.<\/p>\n

“They all came out here to Austin, Texas, where I live, and we had a party, and it was a blast,” Romano said. “And it was like, \u2018Wow, guys, look at what we\u2019re creating, we\u2019re creating community.\u2019 And it\u2019s a community based on authenticity and being able to talk to each other about these fast-paced lives that we\u2019ve all had.”<\/p>\n

The life of the mother of two has slowed down since she moved to Austin two years ago, but she couldn\u2019t be happier.<\/p>\n

“<\/strong>Look, you don\u2019t move down here for the weather,” Romano joked. “You move down here for any reason you choose. But, for me, what I know about my choices are that I wanted a slower quality of life that felt like I could have a community of folks that weren\u2019t competitive and that were supportive. And I got that in Austin.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Enjoying life without competition is key for Romano, who is raising two daughters with Rooney \u2014 Isabella, 6, and Sophia, 4. And she is determined to avoid an overly competitive and ambitious lifestyle.<\/p>\n

“<\/strong>My girls are so sweet, and they actually really love YouTube videos. And my daughter kind of really freaked me out the other day when she asked to make a YouTube video of her playing with her dolls,” Romano said.<\/p>\n

“When she asked me that, I remember talking to my husband about it, and he was just like, \u2018Well, she\u2019s got it.\u2019 But we know what we\u2019re going to do. \u2026 I\u2019ve said I want my kids to have a genuine relationship with the arts. Because the arts were not created to basically be commodified, especially for children.<\/p>\n

“I think kids need to believe in the magic of the arts and just to find their way into their different skill set, whether it\u2019s singing or dancing or performing,” Romano explained. “And even if they\u2019re not that good at it, that\u2019s OK too. It\u2019s the rejection bit and the marketplace elements and the ambition that really kind of sully this otherwise beautiful experience of having a relationship with the arts. So, really, I just want my kids, if they want to perform, to do it in a way that makes them happy. I don\u2019t want to introduce them to it in a way that\u2019s competitive.”<\/p>\n

Romano makes juggling parenting, content creating and business ownership look easy. But she’s not afraid to ask for help when she needs it.<\/p>\n

“I have a lot of supportive elements in my life. I have an extremely wonderful producing partner in my husband, who\u2019s the CEO of PodCo. But then we also have other people, we have a social media team we\u2019ve been growing. I have wonderful child care. I also have my in-laws that moved here. And my mom moved down to Austin, so many people moved down to Austin.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also focused on handling wellness for herself and recently partnered with Emergen-C, helping launch the new Emergen-C Crystals, an on-the-go version of its best-selling supplement that requires no water.<\/p>\n

Romano compares the product to Pop Rocks, a “throwback treat,” as she put it, and was happy to work with the company because it’s part of a fond memory for her.<\/p>\n

“When I was on the set of \u2018Even Stevens\u2019<\/a> \u2026 I\u2019d have a medic start to mix me up Emergen-C, and he would hand it to me as a daily supplement to my immune system,” she shared. “And it was so helpful. Not only that, it was the process of him shaking it up and giving it to me, that felt like a loving act. And it helped me get through. And I would lean on Emergen-C for decades after.<\/p>\n

“I know a lot of people want to take it for when they think that they\u2019re getting sick and stuff like that, but it\u2019s actually just a wonderful daily option to help you get through the day and feel a little bit healthier. So, I really do lean on it organically.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Through the ups and downs of her career and establishing herself outside the world of child stardom, Romano is content with where her life is right now.<\/p>\n

“I think that\u2019s why people are happy to see where I\u2019m at now,” she said. “Because we\u2019ve all gone through times in our lives where we weren\u2019t our best. And, right now, my life is about balance and support, and Emergen-C is a part of that.<\/p>\n

“But, on the whole, my life is a mosaic of productivity and everything that\u2019s there, even if it\u2019s chaotic, it\u2019s still serving a greater purpose. So, I\u2019m very proud of what I\u2019ve been able to accomplish. And I just take it one day at a time though because nothing\u2019s perfect. And I\u2019m certainly not perfect, but I\u2019m definitely in a better place than I was.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
