Two state senators representing Rockland and Orange counties in upstate New York vowed to push back against Mayor Eric Adams’ “bad policies” after he announced plans to bus hundreds of migrants<\/u><\/a> to their suburban areas.<\/p>\n

State Senators Rob Rolison, R-Poughkeepsie, and Bill Weber, R-Nanuet, sent a letter to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday demanding more transparency surrounding the state’s handling of the mounting migrant crisis after Adams declared he would be sending over 300 migrants to the state’s local suburbs. A state judge on Tuesday issued a temporary restraining order blocking a Rockland County hotel from accepting asylum-seekers from New York City.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Fox News, Rolison said hotels in his county lack the resources to accommodate the influx of migrants, adding that the city’s “piecemeal approaches” will not solve the unfolding crisis as officials battle the border surge and spillover amid the end of Title 42.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“This crisis\u00a0at the border, it\u2019s a\u00a0national embarrassment, and now\u00a0we are seeing these types of\u00a0methods and thoughts on where we\u00a0are going to house people with\u00a0no clear policy in place,”\u00a0Rolins said on “America Reports.” “And this is not new.\u00a0This is something that has been\u00a0going on for quite some time.\u00a0Of course, we want the border\u00a0crisis solved.\u00a0But these piecemeal approaches\u00a0are certainly not going to work\u00a0and are not going to work in the\u00a0short-term or the long-term.”<\/p>\n

His comments come after reports circulated showing homeless veterans being booted\u00a0from hotels in upstate New York to presumably make room for the growing influx of migrants flowing across the southern border. There were reportedly 20 veterans who were told they would no longer receive temporary housing at the hotels \u2013 15 of those former service members were at the Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh, a city Rolison represents. The first several buses of migrants arrived in Rockland County last Thursday.<\/p>\n

Rolison said the mayor is being hypocritical after bemoaning the busing of migrants<\/u><\/a> to the Big Apple from places like Texas.<\/p>\n

“I think it\u2019s outrageous\u00a0because what they are doing in\u00a0the city is not what Mayor Adams\u00a0is trying to do to our\u00a0districts.\u00a0They are not displacing people\u00a0in the city of New York,”\u00a0Rolison said. “They are sending people up here\u00a0to Rockland and Orange County where\u00a0people are being told to leave.\u00a0That\u2019s not happening in New York.”<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s\u00a0wrong for the city of New York\u00a0to tell people through these\u00a0hotel owners that you got to get\u00a0out of your rooms,” Rolins added.<\/p>\n

Adams insisted that his office had been in communication with Rockland and Orange county officials prior to crafting the plan. However, Sen. Weber challenged the assertion, telling “America Reports” host Sandra Smith that he was notified only 10 minutes before photos emerged of mattresses being delivered to a hotel in Rockland County.<\/p>\n

“It’s outrageous that is\u00a0happening, and we were totally\u00a0shocked,” Weber said. “The first phone call from Mayor\u00a0Adams was a week ago Friday. He\u00a0basically said due to Title 42\u00a0expiring he was very concerned\u00a0about the amount of migrants\u00a0coming into the city.\u00a0And he said well, we are booking people into\u00a0a local hotel in Rockland\u00a0County.\u00a0As you see and saw on the news\u00a0reports, 10 minutes later there\u00a0were mattresses being delivered.\u00a0So it was a very disingenuous phone call.”<\/p>\n

“We are one of the most diverse counties\u00a0in the state and country but what we’re not, is we\u00a0are not a doormat for the\u00a0mayor\u2019s bad policies,” Weber continued. “We gave them $1 billion, New York City in the recent budget\u00a0to handle the crisis, and they\u00a0should handle it locally.\u00a0They declared themselves a\u00a0sanctuary city, Rockland is not\u00a0a sanctuary county.\u00a0We’re here to assist the natural migration in Rockland, we just can\u2019t handle all the people\u00a0all at once.”<\/p>\n

Rockland County Executive Ed Day revealed that the county has issued a state of emergency and promised a law enforcement response<\/u><\/a> if New York City officials continue with the plan to bus migrants to Rockland County.<\/p>\n

“[Adams] never asked for an opinion, he just said, \u2018Screw you, Rockland County,\u2019” Day said, according to a report from the New York Post Sunday. “Well, here is my response\u2026 Mr. Adams, you can try to run us over, [and] I will reach up and grab you by the throat for the people of Rockland County.”<\/p>\n

Weber expressed a similar sentiment, telling Fox News that Adams “knew this was coming for a long time” but waited until the last minute to catch local officials off guard.<\/p>\n

“He didn\u2019t even ask, he just\u00a0basically thought that he could\u00a0set up a New York City shelter\u00a0in Rockland County,” Webber said. “He met major resistance, and we\u00a0are vigilant in making sure we\u00a0don\u2019t bear the brunt of the\u00a0city\u2019s lack of preparedness.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
