Garden State Republican officials are calling for a 60-day pause on offshore turbine development<\/a> to investigate whether wind projects are killing marine life after a recent spate of dead whales washing up along the New Jersey-New York coastline.<\/p>\n

During a recent local hearing, State Sen. Michael Testa, R-N.J., called on Gov. Phil Murphy to order a halt on offshore wind farm construction in the state to determine whether the project is responsible for the recent uptick in whale deaths.<\/a><\/p>\n

CALLS MOUNT TO STOP OFFSHORE WIND PROJECTS AS MORE WHALES WASH UP DEAD: \u2018NEED TO TAKE A VERY HARD LOOK AT THIS\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

In an interview on “The Story” this week, Testa called out the “hypocrisy” of environmental NGOs, questioning the “deafening” silence from groups like the Sierra Club, one of the United States\u2019 oldest environmental<\/u> organizations <\/a>on the issue.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re seeing the utter\u00a0hypocrisy of groups like Sierra Club and Greenpeace. We do know that\u00a0If one whale were to die due to\u00a0offshore drilling, they would be\u00a0on the beach holding hands surrounding that\u00a0whale carcass sinking kumbaya,”\u00a0Testa told Fox News host Martha MacCallum. “But they’re not there right now.”<\/p>\n

Testa said he believes environmental NGOs are receiving “a lot of money” from big wind groups to look the other way as dead whales continue to wash ashore.<\/p>\n

\u00a0“How much money [is] big wind\u2026donating to organizations such as\u00a0the Audubon Society, to Greenpeace, to Sierra Club it certainly looks like a lot of money because I don\u2019t think that they seem to\u00a0be\u00a0culturally relevant anymore,” Testa said.<\/p>\n

“[When] I was about 7 or 8 years old\u2026.you had bumper stickers\u00a0saying \u2018save the whales.\u2019\u00a0We don\u2019t have that anymore. Where is their message? They’re completely silent.\u00a0Their silence is deafening.\u00a0Or worse, they’re saying the same\u00a0thing that big wind is saying.\u00a0That because of the climate crisis,\u00a0we have to rush to judgment and\u00a0erect these wind farms,” Testa added.<\/p>\n

Ack Nantucket Residents Against Turbines board member Amy Disibio told McCallum that less notable NGOS are also being paid by wind turbine developers to stay out of the conversation.<\/p>\n

“So when the wind companies are\u00a0donating big dollars to different organizations their\u00a0voices become compromised, and it’s really a problem.\u00a0Their silence is a problem for\u00a0people like the senator here.\u00a0When they can\u2019t hear the voices\u00a0of these organizations pushing\u00a0back, the conversation is over,” she said.<\/p>\n

An estimated 32 whales have washed ashore or been found dead along the East Coast since December, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).\u00a0Since January, seven dead humpback whales have washed ashore on beaches in New Jersey. The most recent death came on April 9, when a fin whale washed up on a sandbar in Virginia, NOAA spokeswoman Allison Ferreira confirmed.<\/p>\n

The Garden State has aggressively embraced the offshore wind energy industry, with three offshore wind projects already approved and more to follow, the Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n

In April, NOAA acknowledged that New Jersey’s<\/u> <\/a>first offshore wind farm may “adversely affect” whales and other marine mammals, but argued there’s no evidence that its construction, operation and eventual dismantling will seriously harm or kill them.<\/p>\n

Testa said he hopes Murphy heeds his request for a 30-to-60-day review to investigate whether whale mortalities decrease once turbine production is stalled.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m hopeful. It’s doable,”\u00a0he said. ” I think more people are waking up to the\u00a0hypocrisy of the Murphy\u00a0administration, the hypocrisy of\u00a0groups like Greenpeace and the Sierra Club.\u00a0We\u2019re getting ready to start the\u00a0summer season, which is integral\u00a0to my legislative district.\u00a0People don\u2019t want whales and\u00a0dolphins washing up on our shores in pursuit\u00a0of big wind,” he said, adding, “we have to\u00a0take a long hard look at the\u00a0return on investment for big\u00a0wind.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
