Think twice before you log on to public Wi-Fi. It\u2019s temping at the coffee shop or airport, but you never know who else is parked on the network. Here\u2019s what to watch out for.<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

What about when guests come over? Stop giving out your password. Take a few minutes to set up a guest network<\/u><\/a> instead of letting everyone\u2019s smartphones into your primary network.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You should<\/i> be safer at home<\/a> if you monitor what’s logged into your network. It’s not as complicated as it sounds and is free.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s an app for that<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Back in the day, you could only see what was on your network by logging in to your router using a browser. That still works (more on that below), but most wireless providers let you do this via an app now.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Go to your provider\u2019s website to find the official app, add it to your smartphone<\/a>, then log in with your ISP\u2019s credentials. <\/p>\n

They all have slightly different capabilities. For example, the Cox Panoramic Wifi App lets you review and organize devices, change your Wi-Fi name and password, troubleshoot connection issues, and more.<\/p>\n

Another great feature: You can block internet connection to specific devices from anywhere \u2014 whether that\u2019s a strange device you don\u2019t recognize or the kids up late playing video games.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Use your router\u2019s online interface<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s no app or you don\u2019t want to bother, this simple way shows who and what is using your network. Log into your router to see the most up-to-date information about which devices are connected. Most models will support this as it\u2019s a universal feature.\u00a0<\/p>\n

First, you\u2019ll need your computer\u2019s IP address. This is how to find it.<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once you have it, type the IP address into your browser\u2019s address bar. You can then log in with your router’s custom username and password \u2014 or the default information if you never set one.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019re in, check for a list that says DHCP Client <\/strong>or Connected Devices<\/strong>. From there, you\u2019ll see a list of devices currently using your network. <\/p>\n

Pro tip: <\/strong>See something you don\u2019t recognize? Change your Wi-Fi password<\/a> and reconnect only the devices you trust. It\u2019s a lengthy process, but one worth doing. You can also manually remove individual devices from the list of connected gadgets. Look for the command to delete, block or remove.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Third-party software can give you an even closer look at what\u2019s connected to your internet. <\/p>\n

For Windows PCs, Wireless Network Watcher<\/u><\/a> scans your network and shows you the IP address, MAC address, name, and manufacturer of the computers, tablets, and smartphones it detects on your network.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Note: <\/i>Each computer has a unique IP address<\/i><\/a> or Internet Protocol Address. Some computer hardware devices have addresses, too. They\u2019re known as MACs or Media Access Control.<\/i>\u00a0<\/p>\n

As soon as you boot up Wireless Network Watcher, you\u2019ll see all the detected devices on the list. You should be able to recognize the connected devices. For example, you might see devices from Apple and Amazon Technologies if you\u2019re using an iPhone and Amazon Echo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On a Mac computer, try Who Is On My Wi-Fi<\/u><\/a>. If they\u2019re not obvious, you\u2019ll have to do a little investigating to figure out some of the connected devices. Look for the description and manufacturers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t panic if you don\u2019t recognize a device. Look around your house to see which appliances, TVs, tablets, laptops, and smartphones access Wi-Fi. There\u2019s a lot there, so take your time to tick off the list of devices. Anything connected that you don\u2019t recognize is suspicious. Here are the steps to see if intruders are on your network<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

You can pay $45 a year or about $100 for a lifetime license.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It can also help monitor traffic on your network, manage passwords, and more. Acrylic is a fantastic business solution or a solid option for anyone with multiple networks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Remove these devices, too<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

While you certainly want to boot strangers from your network<\/a>, you should also look closer to home:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Remove the devices you\u2019re no longer using: old phones, speakers, laptops, gaming consoles, and tablets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sometimes a technician must access your network to diagnose a problem or set up a new system or device. For example, a tech may need to access your Wi-Fi to set up the sprinkler zones. Once they’re finished with the job, remove their device.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you go through a breakup, remove all your ex\u2019s devices and any shared ones just to be safe.\u00a0<\/p>\n
