Legendary actor\u00a0Richard Dreyfuss<\/a>\u00a0condemned Hollywood\u2019s new inclusivity standards in strong terms during a recent interview, claiming they make him “vomit.”<\/p>\n

Dreyfuss, who\u2019s starred in “Jaws,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” and many other classic Hollywood films, blistered the new diversity and inclusion guidelines that will be implemented at the Academy Awards starting next year.<\/p>\n

The guidelines must be adhered to by any film in the running for a “Best Picture” Oscar.<\/p>\n

RICHARD DREYFUSS CLAIMS BILL MURRAY WAS A ‘DRUNKEN BULLY’ ON ‘WHAT ABOUT BOB?’ SET<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

As first noted on Hollywood in Toto<\/a>, PBS anchor Margaret Hoover brought up the\u00a0new guidelines<\/a>\u00a0during her interview with the actor on PBS\u2019 “Firing Line” Friday.<\/p>\n

The anchor stated, “Starting in 2024, films will be required to meet new inclusion standards to be eligible for the Academy Awards for \u2018Best Picture.\u2019 They\u2019ll have to have a certain percentage of actors or crew from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups.”<\/p>\n

She asked, “What do you think of these new inclusion standards for films?”<\/p>\n

Not holding back, Dreyfuss declared, “They make me vomit.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Defending his total rejection of the concept, he said, “Because this is an art form, it\u2019s also a form of commerce and it makes money, but it\u2019s an art. And no one should be telling me, as an artist, that I have to give in to the latest most current idea of what morality is.”<\/p>\n

The actor continued, claiming that such guidelines stifle creativity and risk. “And what are we risking? Are we really risking hurting people\u2019s feelings? You can\u2019t legislate that? And you have to let life be life.”<\/p>\n

RICHARD DREYFUSS: AMERICANS\u2019 IGNORANCE OF CONSTITUTION, DISRESPECT FOR OPPOSITION HAS DAMAGED OUR COUNTRY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Dreyfuss further claimed he doesn\u2019t believe any group in society today that should be given special treatment. He said, “And I\u2019m sorry, I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a minority or a majority in the country that has to be catered to like that.”<\/p>\n

The actor then defended Hollywood legend Lawrence Olivier\u2019s “Blackface” rendition<\/a>\u00a0of Shakespeare\u2019s “Othello” in 1968.<\/p>\n

He stated, “Lawrence Olivier was the last White actor to play \u2018Othello,\u2019 and he did it in 1965. And he did it in \u2018Blackface.\u2019 And he played a Black man brilliantly.”<\/p>\n

He conveyed his point with a few rhetorical questions, asking , “Am I being told that I will never have a chance to play a Black man? Is someone else being told that if they\u2019re not Jewish, they shouldn\u2019t play the \u2018Merchant of Venice?\u2019 Are we crazy? Do we not know that art is art?”<\/p>\n

Dreyfuss wasn\u2019t done condemning the inclusion guidelines, saying, “This is so patronizing. It\u2019s so thoughtless and treating people like children.”<\/p>\n

Hoover asked the actor if the history of slavery and racism in America might justify making “Blackface” a taboo, though Dreyfuss claimed he didn\u2019t think so.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Again, he said, “Because it\u2019s patronizing. Because it says we\u2019re so fragile that we can\u2019t have our feelings hurt. We have to anticipate having our feelings hurt, our children\u2019s feelings hurt. We don\u2019t know how to stand up and bop the bully in the face.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
