Amazon\u2019s Echo speakers<\/a>, and the Alexa assistant, are incredibly useful and pretty darn invasive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the practical side, it can function as a security alarm with a device you already own. Neat. Here\u2019s how Alexa Guard works.<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Creepy? I once found a voice recording of a conversation my Echo caught when I knew for sure I didn\u2019t ask Alexa to listen in. It just thought it heard the wake word. Check out this massive list of terms that can trigger your smart assistants.<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you have one (or more) Echo devices, let\u2019s make them as helpful as possible. Change these settings to stop the biggest annoyances.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Back off<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alexa monitors and learns your behavior and requests. Then it knows what you missed. For example, the response to “Alexa, good night” might be, “You left the kitchen light on. Would you like me to turn it off?”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Instead of shouting, “Leave me alone!” turn off Amazon Hunches. Just say, “Alexa, disable Hunches,<\/strong>” and you\u2019re good to go.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Quiet down<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Up past your bedtime? Adjust Alexa\u2019s volume so she doesn\u2019t wake the whole house. Just say, “Alexa, turn on whisper mode.<\/strong>” After that, any time you whisper to Alexa, she\u2019ll whisper back. Talk in your normal voice, and so will the speaker. <\/p>\n

Privacy 101: It\u2019s not just apps spying on you. Here\u2019s how to check if someone is snooping on your phone.<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Your music is muffled<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

You put on some tunes to clean the house, and the sound is just weird. Now and then, it happens. Luckily, the fix is simple: Unplug the Echo, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. <\/strong>The magic restart trick helps in most tech<\/a>. <\/p>\n

What if the sound is cutting out?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

If a restart doesn\u2019t fix the problem, your Wi-Fi network might be to blame. When too many devices are connected to your network, your Alexa device may get lost in the congestion. Try turning off any connected devices you\u2019re not using.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Also, keep your Alexa device away from metal objects, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors, microwaves, and other sources of interference. Placing Alexa at a higher location will help boost signal strength.\u00a0<\/p>\n

No unexpected Drop Ins<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

This one isn’t just annoying. It can be downright dangerous<\/a>. Drop In connects you to another Echo speaker or display for an instant conversation. “Alexa, drop in on the kitchen Echo Show.” You can announce all your Echos at once, too, say to get the family to come for dinner. The command is “Alexa, drop in on all devices.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

But remember, the Echo speaker or display goes both ways. It lets someone immediately listen in or watch what’s happening in the room after 10 seconds. <\/p>\n

You can set permissions to enable or disable a specific device.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Alexa app<\/strong>, then tap Devices<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Select Echo & Alexa<\/strong>, and then select your device<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap the Settings gear<\/strong> in the upper right > Communications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

TECH HOW-TO: HOW TO AUTOMATICALLY ALERT LOVED ONES IN AN EMERGENCY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Select Drop In<\/strong>, then select which permissions to enable or disable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Choose On<\/strong> to allow Drop In with permitted contacts only or My Household<\/strong><\/a> to Drop In only on devices on your account, or Off <\/strong>which means nobody can Drop In.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wait, what?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unsettling when Alexa activates<\/a> out of nowhere. Most likely, she heard something from the TV or your conversation with someone that sounds like her wake word (Alexa, Echo, or Computer, based on what you chose) and it set her off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Try saying, “Alexa, why did you do that?<\/strong>” You can also change Alexa\u2019s wake word by saying, “Alexa, change the wake word” if you accidentally trigger her more often than you\u2019d like.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You forget which one is 3rd Echo<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The default names aren\u2019t handy, especially with several speakers around. A straightforward way to distinguish your speakers is by naming them after the room they occupy, such as Kitchen, Computer, Living Room, Bedroom or Office.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Alexa app<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Select Devices <\/strong>> Echo & Alexa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Choose your device<\/strong>, tap the Settings cog<\/strong>, then Edit Name<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Note: You may not see this option for every device. <\/p>\n

Speed it up<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Follow-Up Mode lets you give your smart speaker multiple commands at once. After it follows your first command, wait for Alexa to say, “OK.” Then, fire off your next command, and you’re good to go. After you’re done, say “Stop,” “Thank you,” or “Go to sleep” to stop Alexa from waiting for further commands.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You need to enable this:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Amazon Alexa app and tap Devices <\/strong>at the bottom of the screen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Choose the device you want to use this feature on, then scroll down and tap Follow-Up Mode.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Slide the toggle next to Follow-up Mode to the right to enable <\/strong>the feature.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018Sorry, I didn\u2019t quite get that\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s frustrating when you have to keep repeating yourself. If it happens often, take a few minutes to give your Echo a better sampling of your voice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the Alexa app, tap More<\/strong> > Settings<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Select Your Profile & Family<\/strong>. Select Your Profile<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Tap Add Your Voice<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You can set this up for everyone in your household if you want to.\u00a0<\/p>\n

No repeats<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alexa often parrots back what you said to make sure she understands. If you say, “What\u2019s 34 minus 13?” you\u2019ll hear the entire equation before getting the correct answer. It\u2019s grating, but you can stop it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open your Alexa <\/strong>app and tap More <\/strong>> Settings.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Scroll down. Under Alexa Preferences<\/strong>, tap Voice Responses<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Slide the toggle next to Brief Mode to the right to enable <\/strong>this feature.\u00a0<\/p>\n
