On your smartphone, the right apps can make a world of difference. Here are the essentials you need in an emergency.<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Apple Watch is a lifesaver, and I don’t mean because you can answer texts from your wrist. There’s story after story about it identifying heart problems or contacting emergency responders after an accident. <\/p>\n

Don\u2019t have one? Your iPhone can do a lot<\/a> on its own. I\u2019ll show you that first and then advanced Apple Watch tricks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

1. Steadiness<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

With your iPhone in your pocket, the Health app uses custom algorithms to assess your balance, strength and gait. You can set up a notification if your level of steadiness drops. That\u2019s important because that could mean you\u2019re more at risk of falling.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how to set up Steadiness Notifications:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Health app<\/strong> and tap your profile <\/strong>at the top right. If you don\u2019t see your picture or initials, tap Summary <\/strong>or Browse <\/strong>at the bottom, then scroll back to the top.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap Health Checklist<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap Set Up for Walking Steadiness Notifications<\/strong> and follow the onscreen instructions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

2. Heart rate variability<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Heart rate variability, or HRV, measures time intervals between heartbeats when you\u2019re at rest. Your Apple Watch<\/a> checks for irregular rhythms, sends you a notification and records the data in the Health app.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Irregular rhythms could indicate atrial fibrillation (Afib), where the heart\u2019s upper chambers beat out of sync with the lower chambers. Seriously dangerous stuff.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how to check up on your HRV data:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Health app<\/strong> on your iPhone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap Browse <\/strong>in the bottom right corner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap Heart <\/strong>> Heart Rate Variability<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the top, choose to view your data by day, week, month, half-year and year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how to enable irregular rhythm notifications:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Health app<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap Browse <\/strong>in the bottom right corner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap Heart <\/strong>> Irregular Rhythm Notifications<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once enabled, turn irregular rhythm notifications on<\/strong> or off in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Apple Watch app, tap the My Watch tab<\/strong>, then go to Heart <\/strong>> Irregular Rhythm<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A nursing student said an Apple Watch notification helped detect a rare abnormality.<\/u><\/a> Amazing stuff.\u00a0<\/p>\n

3. High and low heart rates<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Your Apple Watch checks for low and high heart rates<\/a> that could indicate an underlying condition. You can be notified when your heart rate goes above 120 bpm or drops below 40 bpm while inactive for 10 minutes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You can turn on heart rate notifications when you first open the Heart Rate app on your Apple Watch or at any time from your iPhone:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Apple Watch app <\/strong>on your iPhone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap the My Watch tab<\/strong>, then tap Heart<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

BALANCING THE PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA SCREEN TIME<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Tap High Heart Rate<\/strong> and choose a BPM. <\/p>\n

Tap Low Heart Rate<\/strong> and choose a BPM.\u00a0<\/p>\n

4. Respiratory rate<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Your respiratory rate refers to the number of times you breathe in a minute. This goes up as you exercise<\/a> and down as you sleep. When you wear your Apple Watch to bed, it automatically measures and records your respiratory rate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When your respiratory rate is significantly higher or lower than usual while you sleep, it could indicate illness or a health condition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To track your respiratory rate, you\u2019ll need to set up the sleep features on your iPhone:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Health app <\/strong>on your iPhone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap Get Started<\/strong> under Set Up Sleep<\/strong> and tap Next<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Follow the onscreen prompts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Turn on Track Sleep with Apple Watch<\/strong>. This option is available during setup if you\u2019ve paired your Apple Watch with your iPhone beforehand. If you pair your Apple Watch after setup, you can turn on Track Sleep with Apple Watch later.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To view your respiratory heart rate:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Health app<\/strong><\/a> on your iPhone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap Browse <\/strong>at the bottom right of the screen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap Respiratory <\/strong>> Respiratory Rate<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

5. Activity<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Activity Rings track your movement, exercise and time on your feet. The rings fill up as you go through the motions. Addicting, right?\u00a0<\/p>\n

You can check your daily progress and activity history on your iPhone at any time:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Open the Fitness app <\/strong>on your iPhone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap Activity <\/strong>in the Summary tab to see details about your activity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tap the calendar <\/strong>to see your progress for the month. To see more details, tap a day<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To get information about a workout, such as your route or total distance, scroll down to the Workouts section, then tap the item.\u00a0<\/p>\n
