Former NBA guard J.R. Smith is finally sharing details about his infamous decision to throw soup on Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a> assistant coach Damon Jones in 2018.<\/p>\n

During a recent appearance on “The Old Man and the Three” podcast with retired NBA player<\/a> JJ Redick, Smith opened up about the incident and even recalled the specific kind of soup he threw.<\/p>\n

Smith mentioned that although Jones is a “good guy” he had a tendency to keep “playing” with those around him, even when someone was not in the mood for pranks.<\/p>\n

“Damon Jones is my guy,” said Smith, per Sports Illustrated. “I love D-Jones \u2014 But he has a knack for playing too much \u2026 And for me, if I\u2019m telling you I\u2019m not in the mood right now \u2026 I had some stuff going on at home. I wasn\u2019t playing well. I\u2019m like, \u2018Not right now.\u2019”<\/p>\n

Smith added that Jones began bothering him in the lunch area, and his decision to throw the soup<\/a> was well thought out.<\/p>\n

“Sure enough I\u2019m in the lunch room getting my soup and [Jones] comes in\u2026 Mind you, the soup was hot. I\u2019m like the first person in there. He\u2019s like, trying to make me spill it. I\u2019m not gonna lie, it took me a second because I actually thought about it,” Smith noted.<\/p>\n

“It wasn\u2019t like a rageful throw. It was like, \u2018O.K., you\u2019re playing with me. I know you\u2019re playing with me. I\u2019m gonna show you.\u2019 And I threw it on him. And he\u2019s over there screaming because that s\u2014 is hot. I\u2019m like, \u2018See, you wanna stop playing now with me? You wanna stop playing?'”<\/p>\n

Smith said the bowl he threw at Jones contained chicken tortilla soup.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“What kind of soup was it? Redick asked Smith.<\/p>\n

“Chicken tortilla, one of my favorites,” Smith answered.<\/p>\n

“Cream-based or tomato-based?” Redick asked.<\/p>\n

“Tomato-based,” Smith responded.<\/p>\n

Smith also revealed that Jones approached him the following day and offered an apology.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Cavs ultimately decided to suspend Smith for one-game. He said the organization had to punish him because of the public fallout.<\/p>\n

“A lot of it is like, it gets out, so the team feels like they have to do something about it,” Smith said.<\/p>\n

Smith last played for the Lakers<\/a> in 2020, the same year he won his second championship.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
