Wisconsin’s former Lieutenant Governor and failed Senate candidate Mandela Barnes<\/u><\/a> is getting more darling media coverage, this time from Politico.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Barnes, whom Axios called the “almost-winner” in his Senate campaign against incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson<\/a>, R-Wis., didn\u2019t receive enough support because he was one of many “candidates of color,” according to a recent Politico story.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Barnes\u2019 aides reportedly told Politico that his failed Senate campaign “was something more than a missed opportunity \u2014 it was a painful example of how candidates of color continue to face questions about their ability to win.”<\/p>\n

SENATE CANDIDATE MANDELA BARNES, WHO LOST, CALLED ‘ALMOST-WINNER’ IN MOCKED AXIOS REPORT: ‘SO, A LOSER?’<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The election was extremely close, with Johnson eking out a win over Barnes by just 26,000 votes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Politico claimed that Barnes\u2019 loss was an issue of trust.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Black candidates needed more trust \u2014 and, with it, funding \u2014 from the Democratic Party\u2019s infrastructure<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

That was despite Barnes beating out Johnson\u2019s funding numbers by roughly $6 million in the 2022 election cycle, according to data from the Federal Election Commission.<\/p>\n

Politico argued that funding wasn\u2019t the only problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“They don\u2019t just see the issue as one of campaign money but, rather, of Black candidates getting the same institutional support as their white peers.”<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s always this question to younger candidates, candidates of color. You know, when you don\u2019t look like the majority of the electorate, there\u2019s always the question: \u2018Can you win?\u2019” Barnes reportedly told Politico.<\/p>\n

Barnes repeated a similar claim on Twitter just a few days before the Politico article was published.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“All over America, groundbreaking candidates are stepping up in ways we\u2019ve never seen before. They’re redefining what a winning candidate looks like and where they come from. And, like I was, every single one of them is being asked countless times: \u2018Can you win?\u2019”<\/p>\n

Rep. Barbara Lee<\/a>, D-Calif., agreed that Black candidates faced a severe disadvantage within the Democratic Party.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s no doubt that Black women have the highest systemic barriers to success,” Lee reportedly said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Smaller donor networks, less organizational support, and more barriers to entry. The other more establishment and overly-funded candidates have the resources, but we are the backbone of the party.”<\/p>\n
