John McEnroe and Chris Fowler appeared to have a tense discussion on ESPN over Novak Djokovic\u2019s<\/a> deportation from Australia last year as they recapped the Serbian tennis star\u2019s latest Grand Slam win.<\/p>\n

Djokovic won the Australian Open<\/a> on Sunday in straight sets over Stefanos Tsitsipas and earned his 22nd Grand Slam title of his career, tying him with Rafael Nadal for the most all-time among male players.<\/p>\n

As McEnroe and Fowler recapped all that Djokovic had gone through in the last two years, there was an awkward exchange over the tennis great\u2019s deportation. Djokovic chose not to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, and controversy over his exempt status led to Australian authorities deporting him last year. A second firestorm was avoided earlier this month as Djokovic was able to enter the country without any issues.<\/p>\n

“\u2026 He gets deported out of Australia. Doesn\u2019t get any points at Wimbledon,” McEnroe said. “Can\u2019t play the [U.S.] Open. \u2026”<\/p>\n

Fowler chimed in, “A part of his choices, to be fair. He made choices that led to that for some of those things.”<\/p>\n

McEnroe responded, “I don\u2019t think \u2026 I think he should have been committed to play.”<\/p>\n

“OK, well that\u2019s a debate,” Fowler said. “He did make choices that led to that. \u2026 But that\u2019s forgot for the moment.”<\/p>\n

McEnroe had been a supporter of Djokovic being able to play in the top tennis tournaments despite his vaccination status. He told Fox News Digital<\/a> as much when talking about the Serbian star\u2019s status for the 2022 U.S. Open \u2013 which hasn\u2019t changed for 2023.<\/p>\n

“Well, first of all, I think it\u2019s BS. That\u2019s what I think. I think he should be allowed to play. My personal opinion, as I\u2019ve been vaccinated, I had a booster shot, that\u2019s up to the individual,” McEnroe said in August. “If I were him, and I\u2019m not him, he\u2019s won a lot more majors than me probably because he\u2019s dug in his heels and found the gear, that will, that very few people in any sport have ever found, so that\u2019s part of what\u2019s made him so great, he sticks to his guns. He\u2019s perfectly entitled to make the decision.”<\/p>\n

“The guy is one of the greatest athletes in any sport,” he continued. “He\u2019s very careful about anything he puts in his body. So, it\u2019s frustrating to see at this point when we\u2019re sitting here and all having a great time at an LAFC soccer game and that he\u2019s not allowed into the country right now because he\u2019s not vaccinated. It\u2019s really unfortunate, but that\u2019s the rules we really have right now with the government. I don\u2019t agree with it but c’est la vie at the moment.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
