{"id":52865,"date":"2023-01-12T19:30:28","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T00:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/chicago-bookstore-owners-tweet-about-customers-800-return-goes-viral-dont-do-this-to-a-small-business-52865"},"modified":"2023-01-12T19:30:28","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T00:30:28","slug":"chicago-bookstore-owners-tweet-about-customers-800-return-goes-viral-dont-do-this-to-a-small-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/chicago-bookstore-owners-tweet-about-customers-800-return-goes-viral-dont-do-this-to-a-small-business-52865","title":{"rendered":"Chicago bookstore owner&#8217;s tweet about customer&#8217;s $800 return goes viral: &#8216;Don\u2019t do this to a small business&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A bookstore owner in Chicago has been receiving words of encouragement after sharing her frustration over a customer allegedly returning an $800 purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca George, co-owner of Volumes Bookcafe, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/entertainment\/genres\/books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">independent bookstore<\/a> near Wicker Park, turned to Twitter to vent about a return request she said she received from a customer who bought various art books and cookbooks in December to serve as temporary decor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Turns out one of our biggest sales last month was for the person to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/house-and-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stage their home<\/a> for the holidays and now they want to return them all,&#8221; George wrote in her tweet on Monday, Jan. 9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/library-receives-overdue-book-47-years-ago-anonymous-note-surprise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>LIBRARY RECEIVES OVERDUE BOOK FROM 47 YEARS AGO, ALONG WITH ANONYMOUS NOTE AND A SURPRISE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Please don\u2019t do this to a small business, people,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;That one sale was a third of our rent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>George\u2019s Twitter post has since been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/entertainment\/genres\/viral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viewed 6.8 million times<\/a> and has garnered more than 85,600 likes, 5,510 retweets and 880 comments.<\/p>\n<p>Fox News Digital reached out to Volumes Bookcafe for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter users have responded to George\u2019s post by asking where they can make online purchases books or donations to support the indie shop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/meet-texas-indie-bookstore-making-difference-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>MEET THE TEXAS INDIE BOOKSTORE THAT&#8217;S MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN ITS COMMUNITY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bookstore workers joined George\u2019s thread to acknowledge the challenges shared by the specialty small business.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Being an independent book shop is hard,&#8221; Madison Street Books, another Chicago-based bookstore tweeted on Wednesday, Jan. 11.<\/p>\n<p>A Twitter user claiming to be a bookstore employee wrote that the company they work for has a no-return policy for similar reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can do an exchange or store credit but no refunds unless there\u2019s something wrong with the product,&#8221; the anonymous user wrote on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/book-lovers-america-story-us-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>BOOK LOVERS ACROSS AMERICA NEED TO KNOW &#8216;THE STORY&#8217; OF THESE 5 GREAT CITIES<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another Twitter user wrote that the customer\u2019s return &#8220;is soooo not cool&#8221; because book rental companies exist.<\/p>\n<p>Some commenters suggested George and her business partner change the return policy at Volumes Bookcafe or add a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/shopping\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restocking fee<\/a> to minimize the inconvenience of customer returns.<\/p>\n<p>Others were confused that the customer allegedly told bookstore staff that they used the books for staging.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wait, so, somebody bought a bunch of books to make it look like they read? Then returned then [sic] when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/topic\/family-and-friends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relatives left<\/a>?&#8221; one Twitter user questioned on Monday night. &#8220;I had no idea this was a thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>George returned to Twitter on Tuesday, Jan. 10, to thank the people who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have been supportive<\/a> of Volumes Bookcafe.<\/p>\n<p>She noted that the store typically receives &#8220;less than 1% [of] returns&#8221; and the recent customer she referenced &#8220;was an unusual case.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s not ideal but sometimes as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/small-business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small business<\/a> you end up jumping through hoops to please people that don\u2019t deserve it to save your self from chaos of another kind,&#8221; George wrote. &#8220;It\u2019s rare, but it happens. Thank you all!
